Signal strongly opposes the newest proposal in Europe.

Let there be no doubt: we will leave the EU market rather than undermine our privacy guarantees.

This proposal--if passed and enforced against us--would require us to make this choice.

It's surveillance wine in safety bottles.

I think there would be still space for systems programming language with a constraint from day zero that it would 1:1 compatible with plain C”s binary layout and memory model:

  1. Roughly just .text, .bss, .rodata and ,data.
  2. No symbol mangling at all.

All the memory safety etc. fancy features would be then designed within exactly those constraints.

#Rust is essentially a derivative of C++ when compiled to binary, which does not really make it a strong competitor for plain #C. It can substitute C in many cases for sure, just like C++ did, but there’s always need for minimal systems programming language, which also looks elegant in binary, not just in source code.

A compiled C program can be quite easily understood with a binary with no debug symbols at all if you understand the CPU architecture well enough. That is, and will be a strong asset for C.

I'd like to remind all Mastodon users that you can add a language filter to any follow relationship on Mastodon.

If you follow me and you don't speak German, you can easily remove my German posts from your timeline by adjusting the language settings.

Go to my profile page, select the dot menu and click "Change subscribed languages". Then select the languages that you speak.

This really is a hidden gem 💎 on Mastodon and not many people seem to know this feature :awesome:

#rp24 🧵

Hey, Mastodon … I’m trying to track down an #AppleNewton developer named Stephen A. Cronin.

He worked at #AMD and operated a software company called TapTech based out of Austin, Texas in the late 90s. I’ve managed to contact his former software partner, Francis Preve … but Francis lost touch with Stephen years ago.

Together they released a sequencer program for #NewtonOS called NR404 and I’m hoping the source code still exists somewhere.

Boosts appreciated.

NR404Guy,

@splorp Yo Mastodon you found me! (Thomas T. did)...

I'm looking for source but it make take accessing some time..

This post alleging extortion from CloudFlare¹ is plausible/cautionary. Market monopolies/tech mono-cultures suck so it's tempting to just be outraged at CF.

However, we allow this when we cede control to third parties (not just cloud) without mitigation plans, by NOT:

  • using open standards/formats
  • separating concerns
  • staffing expertise in-house/independent long-term partners
  • balancing risk with cost

Let's have that bigger talk!

Here’s one of the many reasons why I stick to simple, replicable, and quickly restorable setups. When you don't have control over your data or rely solely on a specific service, everything could go wrong in an instant.
