I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do next. I've been a CTO of a $300M organization for 3+ years officially, an SVP Engineering in title but CTO in role for 5+ years before that. It would be hard for me professionally to accept a step backwards from that, both in scope and compensation. As much as I love writing code, I love doing team building, vision and strategy, and being involved in the business equally as much.

Tonight: look up (sorry southern hemisphere friends). I’m stuck in the city but this is the highest level of activity I’ve seen since I started paying attention, so I’m hopeful despite being in a very light-polluted area.

So this was my first computer. I used it as a young kid in the 80s, and was entranced by it. I learned how to program on it, then kept going. I ended up doing college computer classes at night while I was still in high school. Since then I've acquired a university degree, written a programming book, and currently work at a tech company I co-founded.

@preinheimer This is not actually my first computer, but it’s the same model. This is one I found in the past few years and tore down, cleaned, and restored the messy parts.

It’s a Tandy Color Computer 3 (“coco 3”), and we got it when I was 8-ish (I think). We were the only family I knew with this model. We had VIC-20s and C64s at school, though.

I learned to program in BASIC on this thing, and the file operations had no Append mode, so I also learned about iteration and buffers.

This post has a few excellent anecdotes from @sean. My career journey is not very different, and this advice rings true in my experience.

“If you want to do something and think you can do it: just do it. If you’re any good at all, you’re probably better than most people who’ve done it, and far better than those who won’t even try.”

This post by @nikitonsky fills me with a special kind of angst. We are so far off the mark on what's acceptable or even necessary in terms of kilobytes and complexity.

Hey Folks, so we're still hiring over here at WonderProxy.

  • 5+ years of PHP experience
  • Some front end work (we use react)
  • Some experience working on servers. We use linux and self host.

We've got some more details here: https://jobs.ashbyhq.com/wonderproxy/b5135fd7-ae9c-4c7d-ba13-8f1e75aa6980

Dear @mozilla, I really, really, really love you and appreciate all of the work that you've done over the years for privacy and security but please just put more time into getting more people to use your browser. It's already the best out there but you need to work on getting more people to use it so we can take some "market share" away from Google Chrome. It's clear that Google couldn't care less about our privacy. You need to get more people to realize this. Sincerely, A Fan For Life.

I need to collect some resources to read/view on #AI (but really: “learning” algorithms and feedback-based calculations) in a way that’s intentionally not exploitive. Especially on very small and very private datasets.

I know this is swimming against the current, but I’ve come to realize that I live in Hard Mode, so… what have y’all got for me to learn about?

Please be kind to my replies.

Today, I was cut in layoffs. I’m so gutted because I loved this company, & my team was the best; I’ll miss my team most.

Now, as I look ahead, I’m searching for a staff/principal role where I can help other developers level-up through mentoring, tooling/infra, architecture, & improving DX. I’d love to work with a company contributing to open source & even to the #PHP programming language itself.

Update (27 Feb 2024): Thanks, everyone! I’ve accepted an offer. Please see update in thread below.

#Linux folks: I'm looking for reasonably efficient ways to be notified by the #kernel for the following things:

  • The return from tcgetpgrp of a known, specific session is changed
  • The effective value of /proc/PID/cwd (for a known pid) is changed
  • The effective termios returned by tcgetattr for a specific pty have changed

I'm fine with spurious wakeups if there are things that are proxies for those events, provided that they don't devolve into busy loops.

Please boost to kernel people!

In 1997, when we still had 56k modems, if your website took 10 seconds to load, you lost most of your users. Today, Outlook spins for 20 seconds on a 300 Mbps connection, despite being in cache, and everyone is somehow fine with this regression.

This is without counting the lengthy SSO loop that we need to repeat every morning, because "remember me" is also no longer a feature in 2023, it seems.

The Quebec government (the INSPQ) sent me a survey today. Or maybe a phisher sent me a survey. It’s a Sunday.

The email says all of the right things, but the survey points at a URL on the domain ca1se.voxco.com.

I know what I’m doing here and I truly can’t tell if this is legitimate. My only reasonable response is to ignore (or do a bunch of work to figure out the provenance, I guess).

Put things on a domain you control, folks. At the very least, bounce me through there on an HTTP redirect.

i’m really hoping to find in my next gig somewhere that i can post up for a long time and learn a lot and do a lot of rad work, so i made a website explaining in human terms (ZERO intersections between art and technology or similar here) who i am, what i’m good at, and why you’d want to work with me :)

check it out, i hope you think it’s nice!
