Anyone happen to have a 1973 Typeshop font catalog?

Either in Portland, or who has a scanner and might be willing to do a couple of pages, if they are complete samples.

Do you love type and mechanical watches? I know several of you on here do just like me!

Give a listen to my second podcast interview for Monotype with Lee Yuen-Rapati, designer of typography specifically for watches: https://www.monotype.com/resources/expertise/creative-characters-s4-e9-lee-yuen-rapati

(he works for Fears Watch Company and designed the numerals for my beautiful Archival 1930 watch seen below)

@sajatype Thanks! I love it very much. Like a Cartier Tank and JLC Reverso, but different and more unique.

@Stuarthazley Very nice! Love the unique date window location.

The recent TH Skipper has really caught my eye: https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/new-tag-heuer-skipper-2023

And of course, it would be great to have a Monaco one day…

@Stuarthazley Love them all! That Mido is super classy.

Here are my three good watches: Hermes Slim d’ Hermes, Fears Archival 1930, and Baltic Hermétique Tourer

onpaperwings,
@onpaperwings@typo.social avatar

@Stuarthazley I gotta say, I love the Baltic. I purchased it as a relatively low-cost watch, but the quality is amazing and I love the green color.

It is the perfect “weekend watch” that I can wear in the garden, running errands, going to kid’s soccer and never have to worry about it.

Dark Matter pokes all my synapses.

Seconds into the trailer I knew I had to watch this show.
Two episodes in and we’re loving it.

“BIG RED!”

This is the most common type specimen book Mergenthaler Linotype Company produced and it is a fantastic reference to the many typefaces they designed. It was released in 1939 and thousands of copies were printed, but I’ve never seen an official number.

These are my two personal copies: the very first one I was given by a printer, which is wonderfully dirty from many hands with ink all over them, and then a pristine copy that I found on the Internet a few years ago.

1/2

Two large, red books with the words LINOTYPE TYPE FACES on the covers. One is faded red and dirty, while the other is bright and clean.

Do you consider yourself an expert in icons and typography or have the passion to become one?

Do you live in NYC or SF? (and yes, that is required, sadly)

If you answered yes to both of these questions, I highly suggest you give a look at this new position for Staff Visual Designer, Core at Google: https://www.google.com/about/careers/applications/jobs/results/102156249721643718-staff-visual-designer-core

Today is the one-year anniversary of my Linotype Book Project!

To mark this anniversary, I posted a video with updates on the project and (because I’m a nerd) I show three books that also celebrate anniversaries related to the Linotype.

Somehow haven’t heard about my book project?

Well, start here: https://linotypebook.com/

onpaperwings,
@onpaperwings@typo.social avatar

From the beginning, I’ve wanted to be as transparent about the process as I truly believe it to be a journey and not just an end product to sell. So here are a few stats:

8 - libraries, museums, and archives visited

3 - first-person interviews conducted (plus four interviews by others transcribed)

150 - publications and books added to the bibliography

600 - subscribers to the newsletter

78 - paid subscribers

onpaperwings,
@onpaperwings@typo.social avatar

And of course, let’s talk dollars and cents:

From the first year of paid subscribers, I netted about $4,500. A majority of this was from one-time payments, so I expect this year to net around $1,250 or so.

Every penny I’ve received has gone directly to costs of research: flights, hotels, camera/lens rentals, purchasing books not available in libraries, and tech/backup costs.

It’s not a lot, but the financial support keeps me going and I'm so thankful for it.

AirPort Utility was discontinued years ago. It only worked with Apple’s base stations. It does not scan a network in a useful way. Some fact checking when referring people to software would be very useful. https://wapo.st/3wHyd0P There are third-party Wi-Fi network scanners that are very helpful.

onpaperwings,
@onpaperwings@typo.social avatar

@glennf I’m having some weird wifi issues at home. What apps/software do you recommend, then?

I shot these images from my recent research at the @letterformarchive in SF and St. Bride Foundation Library in London.

Attention Colorado friends!

As of April 1, 2024, there is a $450 e-bike tax credit AT THE POINT OF SALE (instead of having to deal with a complicated rebate system) but only certain retailers are participating: https://www.wheatridgecyclery.com/articles/e-bike-rebate-program-pg572.htm
