Friends in the UK, please sign this petition. Everyone deserves health care, even if you don't like them, they're still people

Though, like, wtf is with not liking trans people? That's fucked up. What is wrong with you?

@derickr @saramg my MP is a self-serving megalomaniac weasel, so it doesn't make much sense to write to them, either

(I have still signed and shared the petition, incidentally)

If you read a review for a book, usually people point out what they liked and what they disliked.

How come when you read a review for code, usually, it’s only the dislikes or if “lucky” a general comment about lack of dislikes? 🤔

anthony,
@anthony@bitbang.social avatar

@brunty I know you did that with us, too. I've definitely done it as well, and I see the team continuing to do so. Not a bad legacy to have, eh?

What’s up with 19.2 fl oz beer cans? I mean, I like the size, but it’s not an even amount of anything. It equates to 567.81 ml.

Yes, I know American units are wonky, but sometimes they’re weird because they actually equal to an even metric number. For example, they sell 16.9 fl oz water bottles because that’s a half liter.

So, what gives on the 19.2 fl oz / 567.81 ml measurement for these tall cans?

anthony,

Saw someone say that the more save games you have on a battery-backed cartridge the faster the battery will deplete and I honestly can't tell if they're trying to trick people into wiping their cherished 16-bit era game saves or genuinely believe that. Like, how is that even possible? Whether you're holding a specific flip-flop high or low, doesn't that take the same power? Why am I doubting myself? Intuitively it makes no difference, does it? What the hell?

anthony,
@anthony@bitbang.social avatar

@afilina I think this is the sort of legend that was passed on from the time period that they were in use. Like blowing on the cart. Like that ET on the 2600 is definitely the worst game. They've not measured it. They've not tested it. There's no logical reason for it. But they just say it anyway. SRAM will use more power as you read and write, but I'm confident that the power draw whilst idle is identical whether holding your saves or not. I mean, what is "no saves"? It's just holding zeros

And while I am on the topic, here some challenges I’d like to see other devs take up for PHP:

  • langchain support
  • our own version of numpy
  • abstraction layer around FFI, similar to how FrankenPHP/Swoole provides an implementation/framework for Fiber usage
  • Jupyter notebooks with first-class PHP support

I know there are folks out there looking to sink their teeth into some #php-adjacent projects

anthony,
@anthony@bitbang.social avatar

@grmpyprogrammer is NumPHP not what you're looking for?

https://numphp.org/

Is it more about NumPY's API specifically?

I get that there’s a colloquial convention for this in the UI design language (left off, right on), but it’s uaully accompanied by a label or at least a colour change.

This is especially complicated for an international audience (e.g. US power switches up for on; UK down for on).

I have a hard time believing this is not an intentional anti-pattern to trick users into doing the thing the website wants them to do (which is often the opposite of what the user wants to do).

Please don’t do this.

A website cookie opt-out banner with controls for advertising, personalization, analytics… but controls are slider buttons with no state label, and the visual presentation is the same for both states other than a left/right orientation.

anthony,
@anthony@bitbang.social avatar

@sean I dislike these controls more than anything on the web, including ads, jumping content, and unnecessarily large JS dependencies. They're just a freaking checkbox but worse. Why do people use them? I found some of the macOS UI that mixed and matched toggles and checkboxes. WHY? WHY? WHYYYYYY?

anthony,
@anthony@bitbang.social avatar

@sean yeah, I think that's a pretty common theory. It's similar to how a lot of software people are solving problems that either a. don't actually exist or b. were solved decades ago and you just need to study more bro 😉

    Ever notice how some web sites put you into a sign up flow every time you try to log in?

    I infer a company’s focus by how this works.

    If they prioritize logging in, they’re focused on customers.
    If they prioritize signing up, they’re focused on growth.

    This also informs who won the internal arguments: people who care about users or people who care about sales.

    I’ll take a company/service that’s focused on the existing relationship I already pay them to maintain, any day.

    anthony,
    @anthony@bitbang.social avatar

    @sean wait, why would anyone redirect users to sign-up first? Do they have no users?

    Several people now have tagged me in the Mini arrow-lookin'-tail light thing.

    You're correct that it bothers me but you're incorrect if you think the arrow part has much to do with it.

    It's bothersome to me only because it's a combined brake and turn indicator!

    I am surprised at folks who think the resemblance to an arrow pointing the wrong way is actually confusing: I find it extremely unlikely that people even parse the presence of the arrow over which side of the vehicle is flashing.
