faassen, to history

I recently reread the novel 1984, written in 1948 by George Orwell. It's famous.

It's interesting to see how much its own time informed it.

In the 1984 London, rocket bombs crash into the city regularly and are shrugged off almost casually. Bizarre!

But 3 years before the novel was written, V2 rockets still crashed into London.

@faassen My late father was a young man during WWII and when he had time off from working or serving, he would sometimes lay in a park and would see the V1s fly over London. The way he told that story made it feel very casual.

I love lentils, and I love chickpeas, so when today's lunch place offered lentil soup with chickpeas, I didn't hesitate.

It turned out to be a watery concoction made from stock cubes and maggi liquid, with a handfull of lentils and chickpeas added, and a dollop of over-age yoghurt.

It wasn't worth the effort of spooning it up, so no lunch for me today. It wasn't even worth complaining about, because I wouldn't have been able to say anything that wouldn't be sarcastic.

@halla if it's any consolation I managed to carbonise some food so badly the other day, that it was reduced to a homogenised slurry of fundamental elements. Let's just eat out today.

I shouldn't have to drop into bcdedit to get windows to tell me that the reason it's stuck in a recovery boot loop (with no logging) is that ntoskrnl.exe is missing.

@RL_Dane you're a happy #KDEConnect user - does yours still automatically reconnect after say, sleep / switching WiFi networks? It appears that I have to now issue a kdeconnect-cli --refresh before it reconnects.

There's half a dozen bug reports about it not automatically reconnecting since November time.

Finding my Windows product key used to be a simple matter of viewing COA sticker that has more elaborate protection than a country's money.

Now I had to DDG "windows 11 product key finder". Fortunately, there's a built-in command that gives me it.

But then there's a registry key with it, and that product key is DIFFERENT

To quote Henery chicken hawk doing Foghorn impression: One of these things, I say ONE of these things, has GOT to be my product key!

proactiveservices,
@proactiveservices@fosstodon.org avatar

@yakkoj I've known brand new computers, from the Windows 7 era, which had one key in the registry and one on the chassis, and sometimes only one was valid!
