Idle thought: growing up in the 80s/90s, I remember muffler shops everywhere. And there were ads all over TV/newspaper/yellow pages for them.

I have never had a muffler fail, ever. That includes two <2000 cars (1986 Chevrolet Caprice wagon, 1993 Plymouth Duster), but I didn't have either very long. Were mufflers just a consumable back then? Was there some breakthrough in muffler reliability circa 1995?

@foo Similar goes for me but dry cleaning. I don't own any clothes fancy or expensive enough to need the dry cleaners, I wouldn't even know why to take an item there, heh. "This pair of jeans is ready for its six-monthly cold wash, I guess."

@srtcd424 Yeah, and they simply cannot be asking this of anyone. Who would have any idea what these mean? Pretty much tech people, that's who.

@phpList You don't seem to be hosting a security.txt file, an abuse.net entry or providing any abuse/security/hostmaster contact details on your Web site. It'd be useful if you made it easy for people to report your users when they're operating phishing sites on your network.

@selzero I recently discovered that the UK newsagents WH Smith had exclusive retail rights for the Spectrum home computers (I think it was Spectrum), and that they made sure to keep an excess of stock because of the return rate from faulty units.

Been trying to improve my backups recently with an external drive and restic, but hopefully just fixed a potentially embarrassing, yet simple issue.

The backup repositories are encrypted with a password 👍

The password is securely stored in my local password manager 👍

My passwords file is securely backed up to the encrypted backup repository....

So if the worst happens, how do I access the password file to restore the backup that includes my password file? 🤦‍♂️

Trying out LibreELEC on my very old netbook. Can't play some movies without the video lagging on my Raspberry Pi 3B+. Maybe the additional 200MHz on the processor and the whopping 400 MHz graphics processor will fix it.

A fallacy I see a lot, particularly when it comes to reporting problems in computer systems:

You are the only person to have reported this problem

therefore:

You are the only person to have experienced this problem

therefore:

It's not a problem / not worth fixing

We have Copilot and Bing AI Chat this and that, Outlook offering to write your emails for you and still, when I start typing into a Github issue page, it doesn't autocomplete filter syntax (or autoreplace if I'm using the wrong word).

Probably not something you notice if you use their filter syntax often, I guess.

samurro, to music

Any powerusers here? I am looking for a solution how to sync only specific party of my local library to my mobile device without creating a parallel file structure, aka having all those files two times on my local disk. Any suggestions?

proactiveservices,
@proactiveservices@fosstodon.org avatar

@samurro Hey, you're welcome! Just to clarify my specific use case: I want to sync a number of music folders to my phone. When I decide to put an album on the phone, I adjust the ignore settings as we discussed. TBH Syncthing isn't really an ideal solution, but I'm lazy ;-)

For this share on the phone I have the type set to "Receive Only". This way I can delete music from the phone, knowing it doesn't affect the computer.

As always, keep backups, especially when testing!
