A bit of a frustrating day trying to get my ESP32 Atom Echo working with Home Assistant.

I used this page to flash it, it seems to work, but when it get to the wifi page it just spins looking for a network.

https://esphome.io/projects/index.html

Any ideas what I can do? I can add it via ESPHome, but I assume that I assume that has wipes the Voice Control firmware.

I got access to GitHub CoPilot Workspace and … wow.

For my first try, I went to the @homeassistant website repository and created a new task: "Add to the homepage that Home Assistant is part of the @openhomefoundation.

It starts with turning your task (or issue) into a specification of the problem.

balloob,
@balloob@fosstodon.org avatar

The cool thing is that you can actually go ahead and change anything that was generated. Don't like a point? Edit it, replace it or drop it all together. As a human, you're in control and that is what makes this so useful.

Based on the specification it will generate a plan. In my case, it proposed to add a link to the Yellow home, the website footer and the about section in the sidebar of the blog.

I removed the task for the Yellow site and added a general note with the link of the OHF website

balloob,
@balloob@fosstodon.org avatar

Next is the implementation phase and copilot will execute the plan for each file and generate a diff. In this case, it added the links to the right location.

balloob,
@balloob@fosstodon.org avatar

But co-pilot's work is not done yet! It will propose a branch name, pull request title and description 😃

I created the PR, the tests passed, Klaas reviewed and approved it and an hour later it was merged and live: https://github.com/home-assistant/home-assistant.io/pull/32658

balloob,
@balloob@fosstodon.org avatar

Now, this is a very simple example but I can't wait to see people pushing it to the limits.

I don't consider the output of CoPilot spam because a human has to approve the spec and plan. The generated files can be edited in a codespace, pushed to a branch or turned directly into a PR.

Someone should tell Sonos that while they sell hardware, 98% of their customers’ interaction with their brand is with software.

Shipping good performing native software is what premium brands do.

Shipping terribly performing garbage web apps with missing features in a native container is what discount brands do.

I thought Sonos considered themselves a premium brand.

balloob,
@balloob@fosstodon.org avatar

@maddox also another part that relies on their cloud connection 😕 soon they will be like oh these cloud costs, someone needs to cover them.

Spent some of the weekend playing with Arduinos + Home Assistant (@homeassistant) to keep a better eye on my plants. Even though it's C++, it's so refreshing compared to shipping modern prod code!

Single file, no tests, no 3rd party dependencies, no infra, just run code & see results immediately (if it works, it's done). And with deep sleep the result should keep running on battery for years untouched. Super fun! ✨

balloob,
@balloob@fosstodon.org avatar

@pimterry Nice! You're ready for the next level as Home Assistant tinkerer and use its sister project ESPHome: https://esphome.io/

#HomeAssistant shows a lot of promise for #SmartHome integration across manufacturers, but right now, there is still an awful lot of Fucking About™ required to make things happen.

I'm trying to integrate something and the bit that's required before I set the integration up requires SSH, an additional interface element (HACS), and an installation sequence, accompanied by clearing browser cache, that does not easily seem to work.

I'm as keen as the next geek to mess with stuff under the hood, but this is pretty much deep nerd only territory.

balloob,
@balloob@fosstodon.org avatar

@ZS this is not Home Assistant but something provided by a third party.

With other smart home platforms when you try something non-standard, the answer is usually no. With Home Assistant, the answer is "yes, but". Someone finds a way to get things integrated, even if they have to climb mountains. They share that with the community. Just because there is an integration doesn't mean it is instantly easy. That requires work and iteration and as open source project that is exactly our strength.

Every time I check for progress on my PR for adding support for the EZ1 inverter, I get pissed. I've put a lot of time into the PR I've been waiting for a review since over a month and that one guy says he doesn't have time for that, but still reviews other PRs. I mean, I can't judge, he's also just a volunteer, but I still feel a bit cheated on. The other thing is that HA is (kind of) a commercial project and they ask me to review 2 others PRs to get my work merged.

balloob,
@balloob@fosstodon.org avatar

@Mawoka PRs that add a new integration take a lot of time to review. Many moving parts including reviewing the library that is used. Reviewing small PRs takes a lot less time and can be done while on a short break.

Home Assistant is part of the Open Home Foundation and is not a commercial project. Last year 17000 people contributed. There are some people working full-time on it for Nabu Casa. Their focus is on the chores and releases and making sure the community is successful.

balloob,
@balloob@fosstodon.org avatar

@ZS what do you feel is getting more buggy or commercialized?

The alternatives you mentioned are either big tech or VC funded open source. Home Assistant is part of the nonprofit Open Home Foundation.

Went against my golden rule and updated to a .zero release. Now the integration is buggered. sigh when will I learn?

balloob,
@balloob@fosstodon.org avatar

@dmakovec this can happen on core installations if the integration is imported before we install the requirement. A restart will solve it.
