Every time I swear I’m taking my last flight on the old mad dog, somehow I find myself on one again. This time however, it’s technically a B717 (Hawaiian), newer, slower, and less comfortable than the old AA fleet.

josh,
@josh@joshbutts.social avatar

@ian sitting in the front. I mean it was a 23 minute flight. But the worst first class seat I have ever experienced. Far far worse than AA MD First, which is generally fine.

josh,
@josh@joshbutts.social avatar

@ian not sure what the seat pitch was but very straight up and probably 3-4” closer than an AA737 which is what I’m most familiar with. If I were comparing it to say, an American (Eagle) ERJ 17x, gimme the ERJ. On the other hand, 1st on Hawaiian AUS to HNL on A330 was absolutely friggin delightful.

Oh. My. Fucking. God.

I have just learned that "#Java Bean" has two completely different and incompatible definitions.

One is a dumb, badly designed data object with getters and setters.

The other is... a service object managed by the Spring framework IoC container.

Holy hell. This is 10x worse than #Laravel "facades."

Am I wrong here? This is what I'm finding from online tutorials. Is there more nuance that is not coming through, because for now I just hate #Spring even more.

#Kotlin

josh,

@Crell what do facades have to do with this?

Why do IDEs always default the terminal to the bottom of the screen? I’m always—always—going to move it to right side of the screen. No matter what. Am I the only one who does this?

josh,
@josh@joshbutts.social avatar

@ramsey who used an ide built in terminal!?

I'm looking for a solution to branch-based previews for a / stack. We have nearly 60 sites we want to set this up for (a lot of services I find either charge $1000s or don't even support that many).

I don't want anything fancy, I don't need to edit in the browser. I would like to push a branch to gitlab and have the option to spin up an environment to preview.

I have considered doing it myself, but I was hoping to not have to support my own infrastructure.

josh,
@josh@joshbutts.social avatar

@mikestreety we have this technology at Ziff Davis and have been using it for nearly a decade now. Unfortunately it’s not open source. But it solves exactly your problem and we use it across a wide portfolio of products. It was a calculated investment in DX that we grew over years and it’s now mission critical to our workflows. It’s maybe a two thousand lines of Laravel at this point. /cc @ralphschindler

I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do next. I've been a CTO of a $300M organization for 3+ years officially, an SVP Engineering in title but CTO in role for 5+ years before that. It would be hard for me professionally to accept a step backwards from that, both in scope and compensation. As much as I love writing code, I love doing team building, vision and strategy, and being involved in the business equally as much.

I told my team today that I will be leaving Ziff Davis as part of our headcount reduction that happened last week. This caps what, through various iterations and acquisitions, has been a 20-year role for me. I would have preferred to stay and power through with the team that remained, people I hand picked from my personal network and brought here. Alas, here we are.

I managed to avoid #Kubernetes for 10 years, but it’s finally caught up to me, so I hope I’m a Kubernetes god after going through all this required (by job) Kubernetes training.

When do I start honking like a duck goose?

#k8s

josh,
@josh@joshbutts.social avatar

@ramsey step 1 of kubernetes is we call it k8s.

Silly me for thinking I couldn't find an ORM I dislike more than the ones I've used in #PHP. Then I found #Java Spring Boot / JPA...

This is a whole new level of asinine...

@ramsey @ian That's actually surprising, they had to have gone out of their way to spec a 739 without that stuff

A vote for #Republicans is a vote to abandon #Ukrane, and endorse totalitarian dictators.

If you oppose authoritarianism anywhere in the world, you oppose the GOP. If you don't oppose the GOP, you're endorsing totalitarianism.

Sorry, there's no caveats in that statement. Make your choice.

@Crell @timkmak there are always caveats in geopolitics. The answer is always “it depends”.

josh,

@Crell @timkmak not sure Ukraine can win unless NATO get involved deeply. I’m in favor of the aid but there is no exit strategy.

To my Michigander friends: what exactly do you consider to be the UP (upper peninsula)?

I had someone tell me they live in Indian River “in the UP,” and I looked it up on a map, and it’s not where I always assumed the UP to be.

I assumed the UP was the stretch of land that’s across the lake and connected to Wisconsin. It’s the land that is literally a peninsula. Is my assumption wrong?

josh,
@josh@joshbutts.social avatar

@ramsey we got totality and a break in the clouds. It’s absolutely shocking the difference that last sliver makes.

Today I learned how to squash all my commits into one for when I submit a PR as to not blast reviewers with too many “WIP so someone can help me debug” commits.

josh,
@josh@joshbutts.social avatar

@grmpyprogrammer @heiglandreas Maybe it's Github UI bias, but I couldn't care less how many commits there are, I always just look at the files changed tab for the net result. I always squash on merge anyway

@davidaugust @grmpyprogrammer I just get annoyed with “if we just taxed billionaires", as if that fixes all the problems. It doesn’t even make a rounding error of a dent, even if we took 100% of their wealth away.

    @afilina @derickr ARM has been around for a good while, and ARM64 for less, but still a good while. I represent a pretty large enterprise and I can think of only one (not extremely legacy EOL) thing in our world that isn't fully compatible, and that's Snowflake's PDO driver (works on Mac, not Linux/Arm64/Docker for Mac). I’m actually replacing Intel Macs soley because it's going to be easier for us to deploy on Graviton AWS instances that are cheaper and faster.

    I’d like to replace my Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X. It’s performed well for the past 7+ years, but over the last year, I’ve noticed a significant drop in my network performance.

    I thought it was my ISP, but I’m getting consistent 1 Gbps down/up at their router, so it’s either the EdgeRouter X, a DLink switch, or the 3 Ubiquiti AP AC Pro units I have (if it’s any of them, it must be all 3, since I’ve connected to each for testing). My hunch is it’s the EdgeRouter X.

    Any recommendations?

    josh,
    @josh@joshbutts.social avatar

    @ramsey @grmpyprogrammer I’d upgrade to their unifi express or similar gateway, unless you want to jettison the AC Pros too.
