I feel like I've levelled up with my podcast listening this week. Progressed from 1.2x to 1.4x speed 💪

Finally, today … after listing and selling (some of the) -90 odd items on eBay, I can finally see a bit of space in the office.

Still - lots to do and clear out.

I’m currently at around 20 network cables of various sizes, why‽

Has anyone moved from Gitlab to Github?

What were the benefits? What were the pain points?

I want some of the premium features but the pricing for Gitlab is very expensive

mikestreety,
@mikestreety@hachyderm.io avatar

@DavidDarnes it's funny - I've used Gitlab for 10+ years and I find GitHub confusing as hell.

I suppose the biggie, for me, is pipelines and other Gitlab specific setups

We are currently hiring for a role and interviewed a promising candidate for a second time at the end of last week.

An hour after his interview, another application comes in from his colleague, who was recommended the job from the original candidate. The interview went well.

I've now got to decide between one or the other (or do I just hire both of them? 😄)

Diving back into a project that used Vue and it seems to be throwing an error when I add a data- attribute to a HTML element. It's a static string which I use for something else.

Is there a way I can tell Vue to just ignore it?

mikestreety,
@mikestreety@hachyderm.io avatar

Solved by moving everything into Vue and not using the data attributes elsewhere

Quick! Argh! What's the CVC?!

My new mantra, when doing DIY, is now:

"Treat my tools as if they are my dad's"

My dad takes care over his tools (I do not), so if I borrow any of his, I make sure I am using it correctly and as it was intended and that it gets packed away clean and neat.

I even jet washed his jet washer the other day as I had got it dirty 🤦‍♂️

mikestreety,
@mikestreety@hachyderm.io avatar

@simoncox nothing much. I was doing some work on my bike yesterday and I actually cleaned the tools before putting them away 😆

I'm looking for a solution to branch-based previews for a / stack. We have nearly 60 sites we want to set this up for (a lot of services I find either charge $1000s or don't even support that many).

I don't want anything fancy, I don't need to edit in the browser. I would like to push a branch to gitlab and have the option to spin up an environment to preview.

I have considered doing it myself, but I was hoping to not have to support my own infrastructure.

mikestreety,
@mikestreety@hachyderm.io avatar

@simonrjones Not specifically, but I have looked at (and played with) platform.sh before

mikestreety,
@mikestreety@hachyderm.io avatar

@jaygooby They range, but if i was to find a service which does everything else, I can work on the dbs and our process for getting that to the envs.

It's finding a service that doesn't cap the projects that's the problem!

mikestreety,
@mikestreety@hachyderm.io avatar

To add to this, we don't have 60 projects running at the same time - I don't mind a cap on "simultaneous environments" - I'm looking for a service that I can run a preview env without having to connect & reconnect projects to do it

@MinDBreaK I think this might be the route I need to take. Maybe something like Coolify (https://coolify.io/) will help

@neamil Thanks @neamil , this thread has thrown up a lot of food for thought, if you have something, somewhere, i'd like to have a look - but don't go digging if it's not to hand

@josh @ralphschindler You're killing me! 😃

Is there any "high level" details you can spare? e.g. What is the underlying tech - is it AWS or VPS powered?

mikestreety,
@mikestreety@hachyderm.io avatar

@gcg @ramsey Ah, that is cool. What would be the killer feature is if it doesn't spin up until the URL is access & then shut down after ~10 mins of inactivity.

Devs & Ams would have no problem waiting a minute or two for it to startup to preview it

What would you call someone who builds accessible and usable UIs, using HTML, CSS, and 🤏🏼 JS, and collaborates with designers, developers, and testers?

⚠️ Please only reply to this post if you're okay with your response possibly being included in a conference talk.

mikestreety,

@elly In our company, that is a front-end developer.

The less JS the better 😃 (but clients are never happy with a website that doesn't move)

Excitement at as I walk into the venue this morning and get scanned by the girls they say “oh another Simon Cox”.

This is bad news for me as I can’t get into the serps top 10 with my name anymore as there are more famous me’s out there now. If one of them is easing into my territory there may be a scuffle.

@Adrian got to be careful posting about this.

There might be a mass-organisation of everyone to make sure you don't overtake anyone you haven't before. That way, the average would ever so slightly creep away from you 😆

@Adrian so put your feet up until Jan, right?
