[Blog] Hey! Remember a month ago I mentioned there was a scam BitCoin wallet in the Snap Store. There's another one. This time I took it apart to see how it works.

Edit: It's worse - they published ten scam apps under different wallet brand names. :(

Something I've noticed a lot lately, is that especially Boomer women, but honestly, women in general, don't seem to ask for what they want or need in a direct way. I notice this a lot with my Mom and her friends. Instead of just asking for what they need directly they tell a story, to ask in a roundabout way. For instance, my Mom needed help this morning, and Instead of just saying, "Hey, I dropped my remote, can you pick it up for me?" She tells a one minute story about what happened, no ask, and eventually I get the point, and then suggest that I come pick it up. Or if one of her friends wants to do something like have a birthday party for a friend, they don't say "We should have a party!" They say, It's Sarah's Birthday coming up, you know she likes surprises, what does everyone think we should do?"

I often wonder if this is why older people think younger women are rude and demanding, because younger people often just ask for what they want and need in a more direct way. But also it's probably just straight up sexism, because men are supposed to make decisions, and women are supposed to make suggestions.

What do you all think? Is this just me? Have you experienced something similar?

@RickiTarr The number of times I stop my wife and ask "No, what do you actually want?" when she asks me some random question is too damn high.

Having used web (Gmail for personal, sometimes Outlook for work) email for many years, I forgot how good Thunderbird is. I recently switched back to using it, and it's just as good as I remember, if not better. Good job, @thunderbird team!

I have a question for you, asking in good faith. 🙏

What (perfectly valid) reasons are there not to run #linux on the primary laptop/desktop in 2024?

Excluding all of these, which are also valid:

  • Specific games don't run
  • Windows applications required
  • Missing hardware driver
  • It's someone else's computer
  • Steep learning curve
  • Don't like it
  • Never heard of it
  • Lack of technical support nearby
  • Bad previous experience
  • Prefer Apple hardware

Interested in other reasons.

I almost got a lighter out and started swaying mid way through! Also, the softly spoken "(software)" near the start is fun.

What's the protocol when someone emails you asking you to "give up" the domain you've owned for 25 years because "You're only using it for a blog", and they want to use it for a community they want to build, and they don't want to have "JoinFoo" dot com.

Do nothing? Explain that other TLDs are available? Tell them to "Jog on?"

We humans are weird. We install software, don't use it, but leave it installed for years.

This piece of software has a modest few hundred installs today. It's not especially popular. But four years ago, it was discontinued and is probably broken now. It takes a long time for all those user operating systems to get wiped and reinstalled or for users to uninstall the app.

From 4.5K installs to 500 in four years.

So please take this as your usual reminder to delete apps you don't use.

If you would like a well informed, accessible breakdown of the recent #xz backdoor issue on #linux - give Ubuntu Security Podcast episode 224 a listen. It’s only ~30 minutes in duration. Mostly not actually Ubuntu specific, and very digestible.

Two days before #Ubuntu 24.04 LTS releases, and the upgrade process seems quite badly broken. If you're an adventurous person, I'd wait for quite some time before upgrading...

Edit: With some brutal hardcore apt and dpkg, I fixed it.

@8none1 @sil @ben I did like this “Ops fundamentals” laminated sheet. Seems like it could be universally useful outside the nuclear energy industry.

We have had this robo-cat-feeder for a year now. As you can see in the video, Trigger hovers nearby when it's feeding time.

He swipes at our legs as we walk past to let us know we should manually depense more niblets.

If he's not nearby, when the niblets hit the metal bowl (which you can hear in the video), he comes running from wherever he is in the house!

It's a Pavlov's Cat device! 🐈

If you like older nerdy computer stuff, you should totally watch this video from Adrian's Digital Basement. In it he takes apart an old UNIX computer most people have never heard of. He also attempts disk recovery. No spoilers, but worth watching.
