i am reminded of a satirical scenario i imagined a few years ago where the middle manager stands in front of his 1000 employees, places a tiny black box on the table in front of him and says with a smile "this thing right here will replace all of you"

i thought that was absurd enough to be funny, but it appears people are really falling for this. the more i see AI in action, the more i feel sure that it poses no threat to cognitive work. middle managers remain far more dangerous though.

my new laptop got the same IPv4 from DHCP as the old one! on OpenWRT these assignments are generated from the device's MAC address, so that's usually not supposed to happen, right?

right?

... well, of course your DHCP range has its limits, and a collision within that limited range is not unlikely. however, upon closer inspection it's much weirder:

in odhcpd's implementation of Knuth's multiplicative hash my old and new laptop's MAC address have the exact same value ๐Ÿ‘€ what are the odds?
