I have never been accused of being normal.

Not afraid of social justice. He/Him

I have been working remotely since 2002 and find it amusing that people have problems making it work. #Perl helps.

I do “full stack” stuff. No, not just that stack… the whole stack. Hardware and OS stuff too.

BTW, I am also https://mastodon.sdf.org/@philsplace on the bird site… tho I try not to post there any more.

AT&T is sending out letters warning they want to kill virtually all landlines (and perhaps related data circuits where fiber is unavailable) across essentially their entire coverage area throughout California. This would have devastating effects. Related CPUC meetings will be taking place through March.

Landlines provide crucial services for individuals, businesses, and other organizations in a wide variety of situations -- not just emergencies when cellular and Internet service tends to rapidly fail, but also for vast numbers of people in areas with poor, unreliable, or in many cases (even in large sections of major cities!) NO cell service, NO fiber, etc.

Landlines often provide the only available communication in a wide variety of security and safety situations, from elevators to interior spaces of all sorts where cell service simply doesn't work.

Many disabled and other persons have crucial equipment that depends on landlines. Often they are not tech-savvy and do not have friends or relatives to help them through forced technology changes.

AT&T has been shirking its public safety responsibilities for years, while still leveraging their effective monopoly on services in so many areas.

Their new effort must be stopped. I'll have much more to say about this as the situation progresses.

The cynic in me, who moved from the least populated state to the second least, thinks that they want to ditch all the rural customers.

Which would probably include the largest town I’ve lived in since the late 90’s of ~75k people… if it weren’t for it being on the interstate and having a college.

Before you delete those temporary debugging print statements from your code*, ask yourself what you put them in there to check, and consider whether that should be an automated test. Then - and this is my favourite part - ask yourself if they could have been automated tests in the first place, and whether the thing you were checking for could have been made more easily accessible (e.g., in its own function).

  • You /were/ going to delete them, right

@jasongorman

*Most, if not all of them will get deleted. Those that don’t will be turned into proper logging calls because we are not monsters and have different levels of info that can be spit out when needed. #Perl

Every project should have a way to log data when needed, imho.

As a programmer I find it interesting when people say they hate the sigils in the language… then use phrases like ‘$work’ or ‘$dayjob’ in a social media post concisely showing the value of a sigil.

WHICH airpods case? There are 4 on my desk… and they all have distinct names!

Why doesn’t it use that name when giving the notification…

🤷‍♂️ We’ll never know.

My hot take: Nobody should use a programming language that you can’t debug by looking at a printed page of the code.

And, as far as I know… there is no way to tell the difference between tabs and spaces on a printed page. (by default)

IMHO, making an invisible character that you have to use so important to the language was a mistake.

Bython would be a HUGE improvement.

fyi, in case you don’t know… you can plug the iPhone into the mac and use the network on the mac.

(Or do it wirelessly)

Edit: That way you can type on the mac instead of the iphone.

I’ve been doing this since the ‘90s.

Everyone gets a unique email address (and password).

I know about compromises at my bank and credit card companies* LOOOOONNNGGG before they admit it just by getting an email to the address only they have.

(The address I gave honda when financing my vehicle thru them started getting emails from other car manufacturers immediately after I paid off the loan… a good sign they sold it.)

This only works if they can match the data to you. And, they most likely do that by matching the email address.

Number one reason to use a different email address for each account. And, hate to break it to you… using something like

    username+somebs@gmail.com

Won’t cut it. That is easy to normalize to
