@philsplace@mastodon.sdf.org

I have never been accused of being normal.

Not afraid of social justice. He/Him

I have been working remotely since 2002 and find it amusing that people have problems making it work. #Perl helps.

I do “full stack” stuff. No, not just that stack… the whole stack. Hardware and OS stuff too.

BTW, I am also https://mastodon.sdf.org/@philsplace on the bird site… tho I try not to post there any more.

This only works if they can match the data to you. And, they most likely do that by matching the email address.

Number one reason to use a different email address for each account. And, hate to break it to you… using something like

username+somebs@gmail.com

Won’t cut it. That is easy to normalize to

username@gmail.com

Aaasnd my Internet is out again. Sigh. Yes, I can use my iPhone. It’s fine. It’s my Mac that dies.

philsplace,
@philsplace@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@GottaLaff

fyi, in case you don’t know… you can plug the iPhone into the mac and use the network on the mac.

(Or do it wirelessly)

Edit: That way you can type on the mac instead of the iphone.

I’ve been doing this since the ‘90s.

Everyone gets a unique email address (and password).

I know about compromises at my bank and credit card companies* LOOOOONNNGGG before they admit it just by getting an email to the address only they have.

(The address I gave honda when financing my vehicle thru them started getting emails from other car manufacturers immediately after I paid off the loan… a good sign they sold it.)

@philsplace Did a day-trip with a friend from Calgary down to Butte in 2016, through Glacier National Park and Missoula. Beautiful country. Took a sketching stop along the way: https://cbmackay.ca/2016/07/25/mount-oberlin-montana/

The endlessly spinning wheel in Ubuntu software update has returned me to the command line, which no average user of a modern operating system should ever, ever have to use...

Update: To be clear (I apparently wasn't clear enough), I often use the command line. What I was trying to say is that "regular" (i.e. non-nerdy) folks should never have to do this.

My hot take: Nobody should use a programming language that you can’t debug by looking at a printed page of the code.

And, as far as I know… there is no way to tell the difference between tabs and spaces on a printed page. (by default)

IMHO, making an invisible character that you have to use so important to the language was a mistake.

Bython would be a HUGE improvement.

Been programming the same languages for the last 20+ years and still have a hard time remembering which is ‘elsif’, ‘else if’ and ‘elseif’.

That is Perl, Javascript and SQL.

Every day* I mess one of them up.

Hey, y'all! I'm receiving my M2 Mac Mini 24G RAM today!

My M1 MBP13" is on Ventura. I'm gonna upgrade cos I am ASSUMING the Mini will be on Sonoma & I want the two to be on the same OS. Gonna use Time machine to just "clone" my backup from my MBP to the mini then change the network name (to make setup easier).

The one Q I have is this: I know it will try to name the Mini the same as I named my MBP cos - Time machine, and it does that.

BUT anything else I should worry about?

@lisamelton

philsplace,
@philsplace@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@jann @lisamelton

Stupid question… why not use migration assistant?

I’d recommend not upgrading your existing one until you know Sonoma works for your use case.

It is buggy as hell and I have not updated my mini that has to work as a server due to bugs.

I know it’s probably just the season (near-peak SAD in Iceland) and the times (gestures vaguely at the world) but everything feels just a little bit harder at the moment than they used to.

philsplace,
@philsplace@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@baldur

Is it cloudy over there during peak SAD… or is it just short days but sunny?

I’m near the “inland northwest” and there are probably < 20 days where we see the sun… and that is the worst part.

Upgraded to iOS 17.3.1. All my settings are gone. FFS. Weirdly, my wife can still see the shared home, but then she’s still on 17.2.1.

Alexa just worked. Why can’t this?

philsplace,
@philsplace@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

I’ve got an automation that sets my watch display to always on when I start a workout… and back to normal when the workout ends.

It stopped working with 17.3.1
