I have never been accused of being normal.

Not afraid of social justice. He/Him

I have been working remotely since 2002 and find it amusing that people have problems making it work. #Perl helps.

I do “full stack” stuff. No, not just that stack… the whole stack. Hardware and OS stuff too.

BTW, I am also https://mastodon.sdf.org/@philsplace on the bird site… tho I try not to post there any more.

What's the over/under on installing Sonoma now? Any issues before I take the plunge?

philsplace,
@philsplace@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@christianselig

Mine has a problem with time machine.

I have a synology NAS that I have been using for years as a time machine backup point for several laptops.

Those running Sonoma will stop trying to backup if they fail to connect a single time. It will simply sit at the “trying to connect” message forever.

Clicking skip this backup and then immediately clicking back up now makes it work again until it fails to connect again.

It fails to connect frequently.

Phone Technology Question!

The hubs and I were having a discussion about Apple continually releasing new iPhones without any actual innovation. That lead us to a few questions, that I, of course, said, Well, I'll ask Mastodon about it! So here goes:

Have we reached as far with Phone Technology, as it exists as a rectangle piece of hardware in your pocket, as we can?

Is the future in software?

What about a better version of Google Glass?

Are we heading towards implants?

Please don't mention anything with a see through screen, literally no one wants other people to see what they are doing on their phone! LOL

My entire life, people have been telling me when I got older I’ll start waking up early automatically, but for some reason after living on 5 hours of sleep for a month straight and burning 1200 calories working out yesterday I’m still totally capable of snoozing until 11AM. Must be a them thing, idk

philsplace,
@philsplace@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@hacks4pancakes

I’ve been waking up early since 4th grade.

So, at least in my case… it isn’t necessarily age related.

That said, at that age I woke at 5am.

These days there are times I can’t sleep past 3am.

I upgraded to watchOS 10, and it’s so interesting – like someone joined the team and said, “why do we do that?” 100 times.

  • Was side button multitasking useful? Not really.
  • Was the zooming grid an effective way to find apps? Nope.
  • Did we need the clock in the app list? Nuh-uh.

Controversially, I’m also glad “swipe to change watch face” is gone, because I never did it on purpose 🙈

It takes a lot of time, energy, and bravery to execute this kind of root to branch rethink – well done! 🙌

Sometimes I read American teens say they really need a ride to (1) the cinema or (2) a gathering and my mind is just blown at what it must be like to grow up in car-dependence. The upbringing I had, taking buses and trains by myself since I was 7 years old, gave me so much freedom: to jobs, dates, meetings, school things. I guess that’s the point for some people, to not have those things for their teens.

(Edit to say: cities & suburbs only)

philsplace,
@philsplace@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@skinnylatte

Wow, I don’t see anyone addressing the rural issue.

My dad was an interstate truck driver and rarely home. My mom worked too. (we are talking 1970’s)

I had to get to school using the bus. But, I also participated in sports… and that was all on me to get home.

I lived about 20 miles from school.

Think a lot of little towns of about 50 people each… and the school kinda central to all those little towns.

No such thing as public transportation.

Personally, my theory is that #Apple fought against USB-C and the vast affordable array of peripherals that use it because they wanted to continue their profit center of overpriced Lightning peripherals. Nothing really to do with "quality" per se. Follow the money.

I’m sure it had nothing to do with the upcoming complaints about how the new usbc ports don’t work with the piece of shit cable someone bought at the gas station.

Snark, for those so impaired.

Unpopular opinion: there were some actual benefits to using the proprietary cable.

So the DDoS attack on #TheBadSpace is escalating, so I reached out to my host for some backup.

I'm going to get it sorted.

Sorry for posting this as a comment, but it seems to be the only way to preserve a link to this item for the below report.

Dear @ivory

When I click on what appears to be a hashtag in this post it takes me to a web site.

I’m not sure how that happens, but perhaps it should not look like a clickable hashtag?

Or, the hashtag should do the normal search and a link inserted at the end of the post?

philsplace,
@philsplace@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@Are0h

In the ivory app your post looks like the included image.

Specifically #TheBadSpace looks like a hashtag… and, in ivory tapping on a hashtag opens a search for posts related to that hashtag.

However, in your post… tapping on that opens a link to a web site. This is not the expected behavior.

So, I needed to report it to the ivory team so they could have a look at your post… so they could consider fixing the way it appears.

philsplace,
@philsplace@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@Are0h

That is why I started my original comment with an apology.

Because of the way your system created the post I could not provide ivory with a direct link to the post AND demonstrate the issue in their app.

But, including them in the comment I made allowed them to see your post in context… and in their app.

Again, my apologies for polluting the replies to you post that way.

Now that they have seen it I can remove the post if you like.
