philsplace

@philsplace@mastodon.sdf.org

I have never been accused of being normal.

Not afraid of social justice. He/Him

I have been working remotely since 2002 and find it amusing that people have problems making it work. #Perl helps.

I do “full stack” stuff. No, not just that stack… the whole stack. Hardware and OS stuff too.

BTW, I am also https://mastodon.sdf.org/@philsplace on the bird site… tho I try not to post there any more.

Shit take of the year, so far… the product has a roughly 3 month wait time.

I dare say that there is no reason to market an item when demand outstrips supply.

Funny name aside, (R)?ex is really cool if you need to do something on a lot of computers that have #Perl on them.

WTF, Safari 17.1 is opening tabs in a new window.

Any tips on how to fix this?

Dear @ivory

Just wanted to let you know that this happens a LOT.

Tapping on the image won’t show it… but I can open the link in safari and then it will be viewable.

(And I am just going to pretend that opening that in a private window in safari didn’t somehow cache the image where it is viewable by an app. 🙈

But, that may be exactly what is happing.

The bug is that the image isn’t viewable initially.)

Blank image in a post. View the post in safari and the image is there. Come back to ivory and the image is now viewable.

QOTD: The beginning of the Reagan administration is a watershed moment in the economic history of the U.S.

Pretty much every fucked up thing about today can be traced back thru that event.

I desperately want the ability to disable the top controls on the OG Homepods.

They are sitting directly on the floor on each side of the TV… and the cats occasionally touch the top causing all kinds of chaos.

Most recently early this morning while everyone was asleep.

Been programming the same languages for the last 20+ years and still have a hard time remembering which is ‘elsif’, ‘else if’ and ‘elseif’.

That is Perl, Javascript and SQL.

Every day* I mess one of them up.

I’m so old I expect the default editor to be nano.

*This post brought to you by someone that had to pull up vi.txt from his notes folder because it was safer than opening another terminal and killing the job running vi on a production machine.

The absolute most important play info in my (Apple) Music account is the last played time.

I just listened to an entire album, 12 tracks.

Two of the tracks still show a last played time for the year 2021.

How, the fuck, do you not update the last played time 1 of 6 times?

My hot take: Nobody should use a programming language that you can’t debug by looking at a printed page of the code.

And, as far as I know… there is no way to tell the difference between tabs and spaces on a printed page. (by default)

IMHO, making an invisible character that you have to use so important to the language was a mistake.

Bython would be a HUGE improvement.

I’ve been doing this since the ‘90s.

Everyone gets a unique email address (and password).

I know about compromises at my bank and credit card companies* LOOOOONNNGGG before they admit it just by getting an email to the address only they have.

(The address I gave honda when financing my vehicle thru them started getting emails from other car manufacturers immediately after I paid off the loan… a good sign they sold it.)

*elsewhere too, but those are the most notable…

This only works if they can match the data to you. And, they most likely do that by matching the email address.

Number one reason to use a different email address for each account. And, hate to break it to you… using something like

username+somebs@gmail.com

Won’t cut it. That is easy to normalize to
