> It doesn't matter if I make a dozen "how to disable recall" tutorials. The second YOUR data shows up on someone ELSE'S screen, it's in THEIR recall database.

this has nothing to do with microsoft recall! anybody you send stuff to can have it compromised. you message your high school friend, she gets caught at a protest, now cops have all that data

you can never control the data you give to somebody else, recall or not

Solovyov reproduces the DW videos from burning Vovchanks and in his usual style viciously warns “this is how German towns will look like”. But I have an impression that Russians, as usual, completely misread Europe, which is probably largely due to a genuine belief in the ‘Gayrope’ stereotype they themselves have constructed.

Of course, such terrible images from Ukraine have a paralysing effect on some part of the population, but the reaction of the overwhelming majority is likely hatred and resistance to the aggressor. These pictures trigger the most fundamental “fight or flight” instincts but, most importantly, it’s difficult to continue using this “Russia just wants peace” nonsense.

As a reminder, in 1990s Central and Eastern Europe, massive support for joining was built on just such images from burning and ruined Chechnya… Russians have a cultural ability to almost instantly switch from extremely friendly to extremely violent narratives, and then back. Most interestingly, the perception of these changes can be momentary, each of them can fade away pretty quickly and it’s not treated as something weird. But in the West, once a violent person shows their cards once, everyone else starts planning for the worst…

Alexander Dugin, speaking on conference described Russia’s goals in the ongoing invasion on as split between a “minimum” and “maximum” goal:

The liberation of Novorossiya is a minimum program. The Russian authorities are now discussing two definitions of success - small and large. The minimum victory is the liberation of Kharkiv, Mykolaiv and Odesa with their regions, with Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. That means, we are restoring Little Russia, which is part of Russia as a powerful mighty entity without any share of autonomy. We liberate these three regions with two cities and say: Novorossiya is ours. This is a minimum program. From there we enter into peace negotiations.

Note that this goes far beyond the current territorial conquers of Russia, which would be possible in case of total Ukraine’s defense collapse on most of the front line. But, of course, even the “peace negotiations” are defined by Dugin dialectically:

The liberation of Novorossiya will only start the next stage of the war. The great success will come through the termination of the existence of an independent subject of Ukraine and the creation of a new state of Eastern Slavs for the Ukrainian and Belorussian peoples with certain zones of autonomy and sovereignty for Lukashenko, who deserved it and zero autonomy for the Little Russian [Ukrainians] who don’t deserve it.

When you hear “Ukraine doesn’t want to engage in peace process”, just keep in mind that Russian elites understand “peace process” as nothing else but capitulation of Ukraine and massive territorial concessions, well beyond what Russian army captured by force so far. And then, when Russian army rests a bit, a complete subjugation of Ukraine to Russia. This is how Russia understands “peace”.

A survey by the Reuters Institute and Oxford of 12,000 people across 6 countries shows a huge gap between adoption and hype around generative AI tools.

Just 1% using tools like ChatGPT on a daily basis in Japan, rising to 2% in France and the UK, and 7% in the USA.

The Biden administration reportedly rejected an offer from TikTok’s parent company ByteDance in 2022, that would have given it extraordinary influence over the world’s most popular app.

The proposal would have allowed federal officials to pick TikTok’s U.S. operation’s board of directors, given the government veto power over each new hire and seen TikTok pay an American company that contracts with the Defense Department to monitor its source code.

It even offered to give federal officials a “kill switch” that would shut the app down in the United States, if it was determined to be a threat. So why was it declined? The Washington Post has more (may require subscription).

Question for security-minded people:

How are you handling video calls in light of Win 11 Recall / Copilot?

I do not consent to other people randomly recording me. How on earth do I vet everyone's operating systems for work calls?

Right now I am angry & thus not framing the question elegantly. For the love of all that's holy, do not lecture me about asking the wrong question or in the wrong way.

If you have mandatory work video calls, how are you handling this yourself?

I told you I wasn't done with BIMI yet. Part of the BIMI spec is that the SVG logos have to be compliant with a Relax NG schema that defines a secure subset of SVG. This does not look like a bad idea. You can easily validate SVGs against this profile with existing XML tools. Yet... if you don't do it, it doesn't help. I noticed that many BIMI certificates contained non-compliant SVGs https://mailarchive.ietf.org/arch/msg/bimi/xzYRH72V2HE9xeUfXK_zUgYSI7k/

There is now an official date and time for my talk at Figma Config. 12:40PM - 1:00PM on June 27th.

I should be done with the final draft this weekend. My only concern is my slides seem too bland and text heavy for an audience of designers. 😭
