A human. I think. Grappling with my flaws and shortcomings, and those of the other co-inhabitants of this planet. #Networking and #InfoSec iconoclast, from what I can tell. Aficionado of #IPv6, #DNS and #DNSSEC, #FreeBSD, and #Python. #FOSS contributor at the fringes. Biking, travel, and craft cocktails.

A few weeks back, I showed kid the insides of an Apple 2 and then a box of similarly looking electronic components. He picks out a 7-segment LED and says I want to do something with this.

I'm not sure he knew what he was getting into because all I've got are NAND gates. Figuring out how to represent decimal numbers in binary and displaying a corresponding decimal digit from scratch has proven to be much more involved than it looks. It's actually been a pretty awesome project.

neirbowj,
@neirbowj@mastodon.online avatar

@dabeaz This was the clock I built in my freshman projects class in 2002. I brought it out and hooked it up to show some colleagues when that kid was hauled in for bringing a "bomb" to school while wearing a NASA shirt and having brown skin. I might still have that wire wrapping tool somewhere.

neirbowj,
@neirbowj@mastodon.online avatar

@dabeaz 2002 was when I built my clock. The incident that prompted me to dig it out of the attic was in 2015. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahmed_Mohamed_clock_incident

The international airport is simply a stop on my train commute and as we pulled away the conductor got on the intercom to explain in English that the red seats cost extra and he is about to do a ticket check so get your &$@ to a blue seat if this is news to you

neirbowj,
@neirbowj@mastodon.online avatar

@0xabad1dea Reminds me of a decade or so ago when my partner and I had just gotten off a red eye from the US to NL, bleary and jet-lagged. On a mostly empty train from the airport, the conductor explained that we were sitting in first class without first class tickets. We immediately said we would move, but he took pity on us. I get the idea that sort of thing happens... All. The. Time. 🚃

    @jpmens Ah, I see what you mean. The "reverse" part is a scheme for constructing qnames from IP addresses so they work as useful forward lookups. So, not as much a "lie" as a convenient obfuscation.

    @StillIRise1963 There's a real thing that's a little like that called sortition. It's not totally random fuckers, but people are chosen at random. Seems like it could be really good, and couldn't be much worse than what we've got.

    If I could change one thing about education, it would be to change every example of for i in ... to something more meaningful (for number in ...) so that people would stop writing things like for i in employees:

    neirbowj,
    @neirbowj@mastodon.online avatar

    @nedbat While basically in favor, I'm struggling to imagine a way to do that without also ostracizing "for e in employees". Context is significant for nuanced things like this. The audience of novices you mention wouldn't necessarily get that.

    Why does a UBI container running on a VirtualBox VM that was installed from a RHEL ISO have access to all RPM repos, when a UBI container running on an EC2 instance launched from a RHEL AMI does not, when both host machines are registered and subscribed?

    #linux #aws #redhat

    EDIT: Because RHEL AMIs ship with manage_repos = 0 in the RHSM config, for some reason. Edit /etc/rhsm/rhsm.conf or run sudo subscription-manager config --rhsm.manage_repos=1.

Both modes are very useful for organizing one's thoughts, and indeed, they complement each other:

    It’s now clear that Leonard Leo, Ginni Thomas and Harlan Crow conspired in the wake of Citizens United, where Justice Clarence Thomas cast a decisive vote, to unleash over a billion dollars to reshape the judiciary in the mold of the Federalist Society.

    The result is now an extreme right-wing Supreme Court that has overturned abortion rights, environmental law, and affirmative action. And they are far from done.
