Imagine that I posted something witty about the , today.

Like, that the sank in a leap year or that women have to be given gloves if you rejected their marriage proposals today.

But honestly, I just use today as an excuse to chill.

What did you do?

@adrianfry

That doesn't sound fun... I hope you find some distractions today.

PS ' I prefer to live every day like it is my first. Everything is curious & special that way.

Did you know that there's a place in #Europe that still has a #feudal system?

The #crown dependency of #Sark is a curious place. It has no paved #roads & #cars are forbidden, #women only got the right to inherit #property in 1999, & the whole island is, to this day, a fiefdom.

This means the #monarch is the head, with a #lord (seigneur here) as the executive power & the tenants (effectively liegemen) as the vassals.

Sark has to pay the #king a yearly #knight's fee.

It's £1,79.

I strongly support this new - probably BBC, show you're envisioning.

I'm thinking of Catherine Tate as the lead 🤔

Did you know that REALLY miss the ?

Sometimes in Aussie , you can spot an MP holding paper over their head.

If an MP wants to raise a "point of order", a , s/he has the right to speak. S/he does NOT have the right to stand, however.

Thus, to get the speaker's attention, a top hat should be put on... except that no one ever remembers their & so a piece of paper must suffice!

This is a photo of former Australian MP & Minister of Defense Christopher Pyne. He is a middle-aged white man in a navy suit, white shirt, and light blue tie holding a paper over his head.

Did you know that there was a #god that is claimed to be a previous version of Dionysios?

The #Phrygian people were nomads that settled in Anatolia. They brought their pantheon, including a god named Sabazios.

He was a god of #agriculture, teaching humans how to cultivate plants.
His followers would #dance & get #drunk.

#Ancient #Greeks equated Sabazios to Dionysos.

It was said that Sabazios was ripped apart by #Titans & reassembled as the Greek god of #wine.

Did you know that has a famous alternative to "let them eat cake"?

During the Jin (266-420), Hui of Ji (晉惠帝) was known to be incompetent. He had 9 different people rule in his stead because he could not form logical conclusions on his own.

In the of the era, called the of Jin (Vol. 4), it says that when he heard that his people were starving he asked:

"Why not eat minced meat?"

Hui died from poisoned bread.

Ever so often, I decide that I need to do some kind of #challenge.

I've embarked on an "extreme #Mediterranean #diet", in which I pretend it's 1951, & I'm somewhere in Manna in the Corinthian mountains.

Today, the challenge was to make a sweet treat.

I've decided to make a 'Fanouropita', a Lenten #cake to honour #Saint Phanourios. He's asked to find things that have been lost because his icon was found intact in the ruins of a church.

I liked the #mythology & it's pretty tasty too!

This is a photo of a piece of Fanouropita to show the inside. It is a soft crumbly texture in a caramelly brown colour, on a small round ceramic plate.

Did you know gouda has been in production since 1184, making it the oldest category of #cheese that still uses the same #recipe?

Despite the name, gouda is only sold in the town of Gouda but made on the #farms surrounding the area.

To this day, you can buy gouda, in Gouda, every Thursday.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell

If you ever find a delicatessen shop or some such, look for "Gouda Holland", which is the real deal (unlike "Gouda Kaas" which is the industrial version).

Or you know, consider immigration! :NekoShrug:

Happy #lunarnewyear!

Did you know that there is an #Australian territory in which this day is a state #holiday? (It's Christmas Island)

This is the year of the #dragon.

The earliest depictions of Chinese Dragons come from the Hongshan culture, 6700 years ago.

But honestly, this is essentially "dumplings & noodles" day in my household.

What are you eating?

Do you know about real #fashion crimes?

Sko-Ella was REALLY into shoes. For a new pair, she made a pack with the #devil.

She was meant to create discord between a married couple.

She told the #wife to cut the beard of her man at night to ensure his faithfulness, & told the husband that his wife was going to kill him.

He saw his wife with a knife & #killed her.

When Ella asked the devil for her prize, he was so disturbed by her that he would only hand it over at arm's length.

Did you know that #teenagers could be annoying even 3800 yrs ago?

During the first #Babylonian #Empire, Iddin-Sin, a wealthy boy from south of Baghdad, was sent away to #study.

As today, he worried that his clothes were not as nice as those of his classmates, & so wrote a manipulative letter to his mum.

It would’ve taken her months to spin, weave, dye, & tailor new garments.

The letter ends with: “You, you do not really love me.”

Did you know that jewellery tastes differed between #StoneAge East & #West?

Stone Age Europe (35k-25k yrs ago) had 9 distinctive groups of #people - based on their accessories.

Usually, group association is based on genetic similarities, but those can’t always explain belonging.

For example, despite being widely available, only those in the #East wore fox canines, while only the Westerners wore red deer ones.

They did appear to have traded for their favourites, too.

Hey there! Your list of interests seems neat, what's your favourite comicbook character?
Fav fantasy (book)?
Fav game?

And where is the Elroy picture! :D

Hope you enjoy it here!

mythologyandhistory,
@mythologyandhistory@mas.to avatar

@kiwiapple87

Elroy needs MUCH more mastodon time, with the hashtag #dogsofmastdodon, trust me!

I used to have a (minor) addiction to Guild Wars, like in 2006(?), sleep is overrated anyway! :D

Thanks for answering all my questions!

PS: My fav comicbook character is Marrina Smallwood, because her whole story is basically cautionary mythology.

Cheers :)

An obsession of mine is researching how countries handle threats of #food & #water insecurity.

#Germany for example, has secret locations in which it stores legumes, grains & milk powder.

#Finland has 6 mths of grain & fuel & a min. of 3 months of medicine.

In terms of water security, 9 countries in the #MiddleEast will have extreme lvls of water stress by 2040.
But this will also be dire for #Australia, #USA #China & #India.

What do other countries do? Educate me! :)

@SkipHuffman

I was curious. I could only find actual nutritional information on a photo on Wikipedia, and the one most visible, says 70 kcal in 28g or 1 oz. Google tells me there are 16 oz in 1 pound, so 1120 kcals in total.

As a short woman, that covers me, but probably not many other people. But we're assuming dire times here, so it's probably ok for a limited time.

However, I'm not sure if it would be stomach-wise possible to eat 1 pound of cheese - even if one's lactose-tolerant!
