Did you know that #homesickness was once known as '#Swiss Disease'?

The word was first mentioned in 1651 & described as an #illness in 1688.

In 1710, it was claimed that music of Swiss #Alpine herdsmen & the Guggisberglied (a #folk song), led Swiss soldiers to desert. The singing of the same resulted (allegedly) in capital #punishment.

One doctor thought that the low air pressure made the Swiss sick with longing & would lead, if not returned home, to their eventual #death.

It's in the post Sven!

Because it caused, allegedly, Swiss soldiers to desert their post.

Did you know that #India has an equivalent to Cupid?

Kamadeva is the #god of #desire. He is a beautiful man, friends with #bees & parrots, & he shoots arrows tipped with fragrant #flowers.

Kama is not fully good, however.

As he stirs lust, he'll sometimes pester wise men, so that they won't become #divine.

When he foolishly disturbs god Shiva, he's incinerated. Goddess Parvati asks for his resurrection, & he becomes a spring breeze.

Did you know that some days in were considered especially ?

The 'Dies Ægyptiaci' ( Days) or 'Dies Mali' (Bad Days, & the origin of the word 'dismal'), were a (usually) 2-day-a-month .

Here, shouldn't bloodlet, shouldn't sow or , & & should rest.

It is thoroughly unknown for what these days are named.

@Kristie

If this helps at all, in the very early Middle Ages & the late Roman Age, the dates differed...

@SkollGrimm

Interesting theories :)

But how is 2) related to the name? Do you mean like Numerology? That could be interesting 🤔

One idea is that the days were already unlucky in #Ancient #Egypt, but that seems unlikely as the unlucky days were fewer & different there, & the medieval ones changed over time.

:akkoshrug:

mythologyandhistory,
@mythologyandhistory@mas.to avatar

@SkollGrimm

Could be!

The earliest mentions of the Days are from 354, by a Roman writer who was indeed Christian.

Always fun to speculate!

Well I see you are in New Zealand.

My favourite kiwi superstition is concerning rainbows (you may know it). If they appear to your right = good luck, if they appear to your left or front = go home!

@qwynnyx

Nope. The name is totally obscure.

It was mentioned first in the late Roman era (by a Roman Christian writer named Furius Dionysius Filocalus).

The Ancient Egyptians appear to have designated all calendar days as either bad or good, they do not line up with the medieval ones.

(Sorry this isn't fully open access :sadness: )

Some sources will claim that the Days were definitely named after the astrology of Ancient Egypt, but AFAIK this is unsubstantiated.

Did you know that the oldest known was also chewing gum?

tar is in its simplest form, burned birch . It forms a sticky black pitch that can be used as glue.

Evidence for (& ) use has been dated to 200k or the Old Age.

Birch tar is also a disinfectant & it has been found as a chewing gum in various locations in Europe.

One birch gum piece from 5700 yrs ago, contained a complete human of a woman.

It actually is pretty easy to make! There are instructions on Wikipedia.

Funnily enough, the neanderthals actually used a more complex method than the simplest one.

Just make sure to do so outside (& post your art project!)

#AI #Robots. Impressive? Scary?

Personally, I'm leaning towards terrifying.

However, I could get behind medically-applied AI Robots (#nursing, #hospital cleaning, etc.).

@gregreedee

Devalue? How so? (This is a genuine question)

Nurses seem to constantly have to do things they shouldn't (e.g. lift or turn heavy patients, handle patients with violence issues, etc.). Why wouldn't it be beneficial if a machine handles those issues?

mythologyandhistory,
@mythologyandhistory@mas.to avatar

@adrianfry

That's all great arguments, thanks Adrian!

I still don't think it would devalue nurses if robots could help them with such tasks. Perhaps in tandem? Nurse checks on patient -> identifies problem -> robot does the physical stuff -> nurse reports/fixes medical issue?

The cleaning one, I think is likely solvable. If you watch the video they are employing (or starting to) these robots in Amazon warehouses. Seems a small step.

The hostile environments are definitely a big one!

mythologyandhistory,
@mythologyandhistory@mas.to avatar

@gregreedee

Well. I appreciate the interesting points you made.

I do believe you interpreted quite a lot into a single comment on a video however.

Especially anything about "replacing" humans.

Maybe a more nuanced and less emotionally charged conversation would be best.

Cheers
