I wrote about how Patreon needs to join the :

"Why would a creator send their audience to a third-party platform when Instagram and Threads can be a one-stop-shop with their existing followers while having access to new paid subscribers across the social web?

Patreon can no longer just be the place where creators are paid, it needs to be a place where creators can be discovered. And it cannot do that as a social silo."

Your move, Patreon 🚨

just realized i've had the mollywhite.net domain for over 10 years(!!)

related sneak peek into an upcoming piece: i firmly believe that if you're going to spend money on one thing online it should be a domain, particularly as online identity gets more fragmented. as platforms come and go, you can always find me there.

“The trend is away from an open web where anyone can compete to a world with a smaller number of big winners. For the moment, that benefits large publishers. In time, though, it may favor only one publisher: Google itself.” https://www.platformer.news/google-ai-overviews-eat-rocks-glue-pizza/?ref=platformer-newsletter&attribution_id=665655ae205cb200017b74d0&attribution_type=post

Just listened to @pjvogt and @crumbler on how we survive the media apocalypse. The answer? "We have to finish building the fediverse." Hell yeah.

“Mr. Shatner wept. He was struck not by how much was “up there” but how little. “Everything I had thought was wrong,” Mr. Shatner wrote later. “The contrast between the vicious coldness of space and the warm nurturing of Earth below filled me with overwhelming sadness.” He suddenly understood how fragile the home planet was, and he knew it was all we had.”

This @briankrebs story is so wild

“As detailed by researchers at Radware, NoName has effectively gamified DDoS attacks, recruiting hacktivists via its Telegram channel and offering to pay people who agree to install a piece of software called DDoSia. That program allows NoName to commandeer the host computers and their Internet connections in coordinated DDoS campaigns, and DDoSia users with the most attacks can win cash prizes.”

This is how all hosts should conduct interviews with Trump surrogates.

Abby Phillip didn’t let Byron Donalds off the hook after pressing him about the congressman pushing Trump’s Mar-a-Lago FBI raid conspiracy theory.

I talked to a Tesla driver who was behind the wheel when his “self-driving” tech failed to slow-down while speeding towards a moving train.

He had to drive the car off the road to avoid what could have been a fatal collision.

I wrote up some thoughts about the things newsrooms need to do right now in order to survive the massive search engine and audience squeeze they're experiencing. TLDR: so much of it comes down to creating an open-minded culture of experimentation. #journalism #media https://werd.io/2024/dispatches-from-the-media-apocalypse

Here’s a weird juxtaposition I didn’t expect to read today; from Steven Levy’s Dec 1995 ‘this changes everything’ article for Newsweek: “…people were wondering whether Bill Gates's company was a trapped mastodon, unable to compete in the open-standards world of the Internet.”

Of course, it took the real Mastodon another 20 years to emerge…and it had evolved into a fully open-standards creature by then ;)

This was a fantastic summary of the situation between publishers and platforms (albeit the tip of the iceberg); IMHO journalism should be valued as an independent checks and balances service in our democracy and supported through sustainable solutions like the proposed CA law @crumbler explains here https://www.platformer.news/platform-sales-tax-california-sb1327-glazer/?ref=platformer-newsletter

@mmasnick sees Fediverse Threads, Mastodon, Bluesky, and the rest of the open social web as an antidote to the AI-generated decline of the internet:

"decentralized social media could offer an alternative to the world in which all the information we consume is intermediated by a single centralized player, whether it’s a search engine like Google, or a social media service like Meta [...] one in which you get to build the experience you want, rather than the one a giant company wants."

What does it mean for a company to "know" that their products are harming people, how do corporate scientists convince themselves not to look at the truth, and how does that change?
