@Adorable_Sergal probably harder than most things but not impossible: I know some drivers in Haiku are ported from one of the BSD variants but I don't think any are ported from Linux.

I just pointed out to my kid that she had an "Arschfax" (ass fax) 🎃. That's a silly German word that describes the tag sticking out from an exposed pair of boxers above the jean waistline (see image, a generic representation).

"What's a 'fax'???" Oh god... 👻 (am I old or what?) it reminded me how useful a fax machine actually was. For those of you who had the priviledge to experience one of these devices in real life, don't we miss them really hard?

Translating the idea of a fax machine to software development: let's build technology that adds real value to life, not complexity.

Anyways, we had a lot of fun watching videos about real fax machines and these nice retro sounds they made.

@louis when I was a kid/teenager faxes were common in offices and my family had one in our house but I only knew one person with a fax machine that I actually had an inclination to write to. But by the time I was considered responsible enough to have an office job offices had stopped having fax machines.

Helping someone debug something, said they asked chatgpt about what a series of bit shift operations were doing. He thought it was actually evaluating the code, yno like it presents itself as doing. Instead its example was a) not the code he put in, with b) incorrect annotations, and c) even more incorrect sample outputs. Has been doing this all day and had just started considering maybe chatGPT was wrong.

I was like first of all never do that again, and explained how chatGPT wasnt doing anything like what he thought it was doing. We spent 2 minutes isolating that code, printing out the bit string after each operation, and he immediately understood what was going on.

I fucking hate these LLMs. Empowerment is learning how to figure things out, how to make tools for yourself and how to debug problems. These things are worse than disempowering, teaching people to be dependent on something that teaches them bullshit.

Edit: too many ppl reading this as "this person bad at programming" - not what I meant. Criticism is of deceptive presentation of LLMs.

@jonny on one of my projects I ended up using one of the unit testing frameworks that ChatGPT named when I asked it for suggestions but beyond that it's been about as helpful to me as a rubber duck or possibly an initially blank notes.txt.

@dave I've had a similar series of thoughts running round in my head recently but I have three things preventing me from turning it into a coding exercise.

    1. I'm accompanying my kid in hospital right now
    2. That aside, I'm currently on a roll with one of my other projects
    3. I have a fairly strong suspicion that what I'm thinking is already how Krita works (I'm not that familiar with Krita yet)

Back with my little girl in hospital after her difficulty breathing returned. While we were still in the emergency room several times I overheard doctors basically listing her symptoms and then naming some other kid. All testing negative for Covid, flu, and the other one they test for.
I'm assuming there's some threshold that hasn't been crossed after which someone takes a closer look at some boogers, but I worry that there just isn't.
