There are over 20,000 servers on the Fediverse today. Each one of them in some part responsible for moderating the entire network.

No matter how big or small or personal or public your server is, IFTAS Connect can be a resource for you!

➡️ https://connect.iftas.org

The community library is open to all, no sign-up required. Resources for moderators and community managers of any and all platforms. Tell your neighbourhood admin!

🎉 Absolutely thrilled to watch the public launch of IFTAS Connect today.

Volunteer social media moderators do some of the hardest, often traumatic work on the Internet keeping people safe - all for no love, little or no money, and with very little support.

IFTAS Connect is one path to building collaborative spaces to share the load and connect with peers around the world.

If you're a moderator, community manager, T&S pro, or researcher, come see what we've built!

Thrilled to see @Mastodon's updated code of conduct, fostering respect and safety for all.

The new guidelines, including bans on deadnaming and misgendering, clear rules on explicit content, and mandated credit for creators, are very welcome changes.

The introduction of AI usage disclosure rules is a forward-thinking decision, and although monitoring tools are evolving, this rule is pivotal in shaping the conversation around responsible content creation.

I just had to deal with the worst kind of report, I immediately banned the account and cleared associated media from our CDN

Ended up spending the evening working on federating account deletions to purge this from known fediverse servers (done ✅)

Now I'm working to make it easier for admins to report illegal content to the authorities

I'm making this public because @pixelfed needs your help to report sus posts and feedback on how to keep our community safe from illegal content

#askFedi

jaz,
@jaz@mastodon.iftas.org avatar

@dansup @gavi @pixelfed Assuming this is child abuse related, we've worked with numerous child safety agencies over the past nine months, and compiled some guidance here: https://github.com/iftas-org/resources/tree/main/CSAM-CSE

Definition of "illegal" varies, but as long as the service has users in one of the jurisdictions where it's illegal, then it's illegal.

Most countries do not require a service provider to actively seek out the content, but must take action when they become aware. (1/2)

jaz,
@jaz@mastodon.iftas.org avatar

@dansup @gavi @pixelfed

IFTAS is creating a Content Classification Service to operate media scanning in a hash-and-match system whereby media sent to IFTAS is hashed, compared to known hashes, and pertinent matches will be flagged, and IFTAS will take on the role of reporting where and when needed. Media is never sent to any third party by IFTAS unless flagged.

If this may be something worth considering being able to hook into, please reach out. (2/2)

Reminder that Middlesex University London is seeking volunteer moderators to participate in research about the impact of upsetting material, and how moderators cope with the work.

The survey is mostly written for salaried moderation teams, but Middlesex has asked volunteers to skip any irrelevant questions, they really want to hear from us!

The study may lead to tools you can use to help with moderator stress.

Middlesex University London is seeking Moderators to participate in research regarding the impact of moderating upsetting material, and how moderators cope with the impact.

The survey description is written for employees of organisations that employ moderators, but Middlesex has specifically asked to find some Fediverse moderators as well, to ensure they have a broad view of the impact.

An investigation found hundreds of known images of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) in an open dataset used to train popular AI image generation models, such as Stable Diffusion.
Models trained on this dataset, known as LAION-5B, are being used to create photorealistic AI-generated nude images, including CSAM.

"I got 3 whole spam messages today, so I'm going to defederate from a server that comprises over 1/5th of the entire network" is certainly a choice. That some admins are making today. Good luck with that.

jaz,

@evan @luis_in_brief @sgf Spam is on the list thanks to the needs assessment, but it's not on the front burner. Here's our current activities (not great on mobile, sorry):

https://cryptpad.fr/kanban/#/2/kanban/view/E4DOgQKxzlKDmVescviFZRXS8L0MM-JNGxIoo20sk2M/

Happy to talk with folks if we can support any activity in this space right now, otherwise we'll be looking early '24 to see if there's APIs or services we can help connect or acquire to help remediate the inevitable spam.

jaz,
@jaz@mastodon.iftas.org avatar

@thisismissem @evan @luis_in_brief @sgf I'm thinking we can be helpful mitigating spam account creation, I'm not sure how helpful a third-party can be with spam content classification in as timely a fashion as would be needed to combat spam messaging. Still, happy to discuss and support any and all activity that moves the needle.

Are followers-only posts public? A poll

Followers-only posts are only visible to your followers -- and to admins of any instances your followers on. But if you haven't turned on "approve followes", anybody who's logged in to an instance you haven't blocked can folloow you and get access to your followers-only posts.

In your view, are followers-only posts public?

jaz,
@jaz@mastodon.iftas.org avatar

@thenexusofprivacy I believe some of this ambiguity could be removed if the client label was "Change post visibility" instead of "Change post privacy"; and remove the icons from the four options, they do not adequately reflect the semantics (and IMO in fact offer a second, incorrect meaning - eg unlocked != unlisted, and followers only != locked). Even in this post and its comments, we are conflating visibility, availability, and the "spatial" publicness of the network or the content therein.

We'd love to find and organize some guides that arent based around liability the way most corporate moderation policies are - surely theres a huge amount of field tested wisdom about what works for policy and discretion, how to weigh conflicting concerns, etc. Especially for the fedi where moderating in vs. out of instance moderation has very different goals and impacts.

We'll work on compiling any recs together on our wiki, we've looked but havent found much!

    @josh @Precz @matrix there's an exemption for private business operations that are employees only (internal slack eg), but I /think/ you have to be a company of some sort to be in scope.

    You'll also need to be classified as a Category 1, 2a or 2b service, none of which has been defined/registered by Ofcom yet afaik.

    Very aside, I had a quick corridor chat with Ofcom about Mastodon, they said it's not on their radar. Yet.
