@ahimsa_pdx As soon as I'm back in the same state as him, I will absolutely pass on the message, and the pats. I can't wait to get back to the Orion spam actually being daily again, but this trip has been extremely hectic and I can't spin every plate right now.
Good news a from NC. Republicans passed a law that required a postcard be sent to the address of any person who took advantage of same-day registration, if the card was undeliverable by the post office the vote would be thrown out.
(The voter would not even be notified this happened.)
Like many voter suppression laws, it almost sounds sensible: if you don't think about it much.
On closer inspection, it is designed to target poor, minority and/or young voters. 1/
@futurebird In Colorado, I get a text message when my ballot is mailed, when the county picks it up from the box, and when it's counted. An email too. And on the same page I sign up for all these, I can view my voting history (not who I voted for, but that I voted and when/where, and if it's a primary which party's ballot I completed). More states need to do this.
Also in Colorado, you have to put postage on your ballot if you mail it, and it's a nonstandard amount. Which, WTF.
When I heard that #Scalise had multiple myeloma—which my dad died of—I wondered if he'd get stem cell treatment despite having voted & campaigned against stem cell therapy. My dad was too old for this option. Lucky for Scalise, hypocrisy is no barrier
Jake Sherman: STEVE SCALISE will be out of DC until Feb…getting a stem-cell transplant.
House GOP has 220-seat majority. Bill Johnson is out Jan. 21. After that, w Scalise out, GOP will have a bare bones 218-seat majority
@michaelgemar@Npars01@GottaLaff Makes sense. Wilhoit's Law in action. "Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect."
@annaecook There's a very popular brand of kitchen/household gadgets called OXO that got its start doing adaptive stuff like can openers for people with weakness in their hands. Abled people realized that a lot of these designs made things way easier for them too. The curb cut effect strikes again.
The ban of one-off custom gear for awareness/advocacy games apparently extends to Marc-André Fleury's mask for Native American Heritage Night. Which he had hand-painted by a Prairie Island artist in honor of his wife. MAF said straight-up he'd pay the fine himself. So the league went after the Wild. And now he's sitting out tonight.
Fleury is the only one here who isn't being a coward.
@hannu_ikonen I really, really hope that Fleury gives the league the middle finger and declares that this is the mask he's wearing full-time now. Because then it's not for a theme night and nobody can do anything about it.
@MGFarm It's just got to be so much pressure on them, too. I know when I was 18 or 19 I wouldn't have been able to handle it. I wouldn't be able to handle it now, either.
I remember what a big deal it was when #StarTrek The Next Generation premiered. I was still in high school but went to college soon after where I found out I was not the only Trek fan on the planet.
We take Star Trek for granted today big time, back then it was a miracle we were getting new adventures with a new crew and new ship every week. The series had ups and downs but overall I adored it and it set the tone for the modern franchise we love. 🖖
@gedeonm My dad plopped me onto the couch when I was a toddler and said "you're gonna love this." It was the premiere of Encounter at Farpoint. He was right. Also I am downright angry that he never got to experience Lower Decks.
A friend is awaiting a double lung transplant. Two operations canceled at last minute because the donor lungs were not in good enough shape. Now she's going in at 5 p.m. today. I hate that it means someone has passed, but am hoping so badly the third time is a charm for her and she comes through it okay.
@IdahoLark My dad didn't qualify for large organ donations, but his corneas went to Ireland and they were able to use his bones and some tendons and other soft tissue for grafting. So even if you don't think you're a candidate, you may be able to do some good!
When an app asks for permissions, the OS should not only let you answer yes or no. Every category should have a "yes, but feed the app fake data" option.
Want my contacts for no reason? Have these generated fake ones! Wanna listen to my microphone? Here's random ambiance sounds! Location? I'm on a tiny 5x5m island!
Hell yeah! Put it all in your databases mfers!
Actively punishing services wins over boycotts any day. Didn't want that junk in the database? Don't ask for it!
My only notes as a West Coast asthmatic are: Test all your masks bc some will filter smoke better than others. Wash your clothes after being outdoors. Take extra showers if you can, especially before bed—and use something with a surfactant in your hair, bc co-wash doesn’t do a great job with smoke particles. Put your air filters in the bedroom at night. Offer extra masks to people who work outdoors.
@kissane And if you drive, make sure the windows are closed and the air conditioner is set to recirculate (not bring air in from inside). You'll also probably have to change your filters as soon as this clears.
@mike I'm holding my nose and cheering for Vegas because Nevada isn't trying to genocide my friends. But as a team (independent of location) I think I prefer the Panthers.
