Tell me a silly/funny childhood story!

I'll start:

One time in Sunday School, the teacher was talking about the difference between humans and animals, and mentioned that Animals had Tails and humans didn't. I let her know this was not true, because my Dad had a tail, just in the front, instead of the back. The teacher was silent for several seconds, and tried to correct me in a church appropriate way, but I doubled down, and insisted that my little brothers also had front tails too. This got so heated that the teacher had to go get my parents to take me out of Sunday School.

@RickiTarr When I was in third or fourth grade, I was on a road trip with my parents and we were driving by a farm. My mom pointed to a silo, and informed me that the tall structure next to the barn was called a silo. Being the smartass that I was (but not really trying to be), I replied, "Duh. I learned that in kindergarten." My dad thought that was beyond hilarious, and it became an inside family joke that whenever something was painfully obvious, we would say "I learned that in kindergarten."

My heart aches for the children who will no longer have access to their local library because some arrogant assholes decided to be offended by books with new ideas and different perspectives.

The cruelty is the point.

Lots of debate about this, so I'm curious about the consensus.

Should children be allowed to act professionally, as in having a full time acting job in movie/TV/stage? Feel free to elaborate in the comments.

dbsalk,

@RickiTarr I'd be curious to know the breakdown of positive child actor success stories vs. negative ones. The failures always get sensationalized in the tabloids, and even stars who seem to be well-adjusted adults - Drew Barrymore or the late Shirley Temple - have horror stories from their childhood. But I wonder if there are former child actors who can speak to a loving and positive experience that they would be happy to repeat. If so, how many?

Alright, lots of heavy discussions today, so let's talk about something silly!

What is a movie that always makes you laugh?

Personal pick:

Anything Mel Brooks, but Robin Hood: Men in Tights, it's just funny every time I watch it.

dbsalk,
@dbsalk@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr Blazing Saddles and Office Space both give me so much joy every time I watch. Also, a dark horse: Colin Farrell is hilarious in In Bruges.

My employer has made the "extremely difficult decision to reduce our coworker force" #today, so I'm feeling a lot of emotions right now. Relief that I still have a job. Anger and sadness that people I like do not. Jump scare when I got a Teams call from a higher up:

"Hey David, how are you doing?"
"Well, that kind of depends on what you're about to tell me."

To be clear: layoffs are rarely handled well, but I feel like my employer is better than most at this sort of thing.

It still sucks.

I grew up in Evanston, Illinois (near #Chicago). Now living in Buffalo Grove, Illinois (sort of near Chicago). Married to a woman I love. We have two boys, 8 & 10. I enjoy dad things, reading (or listening to) books, and learning. I might like building my kids' #Lego sets more than they do.

@RickiTarr My boys (8 & 11) just finished the live-action series and loved it. The 11yo thought he was too cool for it at first, but changed his mind ~20 minutes in.

Now they're watching the animated version.

The blurb on the Barnes & Noble website states "Taut, propulsive, and impossible to look away from, Emma Cline’s The Guest is a spellbinding literary achievement." I'm not sure I'd go that far. It's good, but I'm almost 2/3 of the way through and still waiting to see how the protagonist got in the situation she's in. I'm sure (I hope) there's a big reveal coming, but I don't get why Cline felt the need to be coy. Seems unnecessary. #Books #FridayReads #Bookstodon #Fiction @bookstodon

I really need to start keeping notes on how/why I put a book to my TBR pile. The East Indian by Brinda Charry was added about a year ago, and I don't remember how I found out about it. A truly unique tale about an Indian boy winding up first in England and then Virginia during the 17th century efforts at colonization, for me this book is historical fiction at its absolute best. It might be one of the best books I pick up in 2024. #FridayReads #Fiction #AmReading #Books #Bookstodon @bookstodon

The "Three Body Problem" on Netflix on it's own is bad, but once you compare it to the book, it's much much worse.

The ONLY really good book to movie adaptation I have ever seen was "Silence of the lambs". It more or less just turned the book into a script. The most accurate adaptation I've seen to this day.

What's YOUR favorite book to movie adaptation? Tell us why!

dbsalk,
@dbsalk@mastodon.social avatar

@Mrfunkedude Are we just talking about movies, or do mini-series count as well?

IMO, Hollywood is more likely than not to shit all over the source material. There are, of course, exceptions. Here are a few that come immediately to mind:

Shawshank Redemption
Seabiscuit
The Crossing
Good Omens
I Love You, Beth Cooper
Sleepers
Lonesome Dove
A Christmas Carol (George C. Scott version)
The Road
Interview With The Vampire
Into the Wild

Neil Gaiman ( @neilhimself when he's posting here - which isn't often) is one of my favorite authors, and I'm usually in awe of just about everything he does. It was a cinch, then, that I picked up Unnatural Creatures, an arrangement of short stories that he picked out. So far, all of the stories are good. Surprisingly, I would say that Gaiman's own contribution is the weakest of the bunch, but still entertaining. #FridayReads #AmReading #Books #ShortStories #Bookstodon @bookstodon
