@siracusa I’m sure you’ve heard this already but in German the “w” is pronounced similarly to the English “v.” So “Weissach” sounds a bit like “Veisack” https://youtu.be/vrtZRXVmMi4

If we can charge everything with one charger now thanks to USB-C, why do some of my devices charge only with old charger blocks? (Seriously, why?) Leaving aside the whole debacle of unlabeled and widely variant cable capabilities. The idea that charging is "fixed" is risible.

Wait, the dongle uses bluetooth in addition to USB-C? That's another level of crazytown.

chadgeidel,

@lauren @robpike Oh, that's actually pretty neat.

Is this a product a normal person like me can buy or is it something you build by hand?

Holy shit, I got almost $200 from that class action for the Apple batteries!

chadgeidel,

@ernie I'm pretty sure I had at least one Apple product during that era. I don't remember signing up for any lawsuit or denying involvement.

How did you get contacted? Email? Postal mail?

$500K home prices. And that's totally not unusual.

My grandparents bought their second home in the early 80s for under $40K.

Could be wrong, but I think maybe we're headed in the wrong direction.

@mentallyalex

That's a "unique" take on what Prop HH would have done. I live in Colorado and did extensive research on this and never came across this potential outcome.

Care to share any evidence this is remotely true?

The worst thing about console gaming is how, at every generation, Sony and Microsoft promise that every game will run at 60fps but then, inevitably, games get released which top out at 30fps.

chadgeidel,
@chadgeidel@mastodon.cloud avatar

@atomicpoet don’t many new games have a “performance/prettiness” setting now days? Or is that just a select few?

I seem to remember that mentioned in a few reviews. (I don’t have a modern Xbox or PSn)

Next time we establish a global standard for how we're going to connect all peripherals to all computers, let's pick a standard that lets us plug in more than four things.

chadgeidel,
@chadgeidel@mastodon.cloud avatar

@waldoj If I may add an addendum, I'd like the standard to include the kinds of things you can plug in stamped on the cable. Unlike the vague "this hole looks like this hole, will it work?" standard we got.

@dworkin I like this but 3 months isn't long enough. Almost anyone could find a way to live through 3 months of suffering if they knew that, at the end, they would live the rest of their lives in luxury.

Make them live for 3 years off their lowest paid employee's salary. No "calls to daddy." No "staying at a friend's house."

What is a word that you had read, but after hearing it spoken aloud, you realized you were pronouncing completely wrong in your head?

Mine is pretty Embarrassing, and is just one of many!

MISLED! I'm not even sure how to type this out for it to make sense, but it was something like:

Myz-ulled

chadgeidel,
@chadgeidel@mastodon.cloud avatar

@RickiTarr not me but I hear this a lot in computing circles:

"Cache" (basically a collection of easy to access items) is pronounced "cash" as in money. Not cash-ay as in panache.

So, the hubs and I have a one of the long term couple debates about when is the best time to shower.

For me, a shower is calming and relaxing, so I tend to do it in the evening or before bed.

He says it's refreshing and energizing, so it helps him wake up, and get going in the morning.

How about y'all, is it relaxing, refreshing, something in between, or something different entirely? When do you normally do it? Have you always done it the same or have you changed over the years?

chadgeidel,
@chadgeidel@mastodon.cloud avatar

@RickiTarr I view a shower as a routine part of "not descending into feral madness" and as such keep to a once a day "whenever it fits in" routine. XD

chadgeidel,
@chadgeidel@mastodon.cloud avatar

@RickiTarr While it's hard to say "never" in this case. I'm strongly disinclined to get married again.

And I don't mean my partner was terrible. I think I've come to the conclusion that I'm maybe not a good partner, and I'm ok with living alone.

At trial, Epic argues Google “bribed” its way to an Android app monopoly

Google says "bribe is a pretty strong word" for efforts to court app developers.

@arstechnica This is pretty ironic because the only reason I have the Epic Games client installed on my PC is because I get a ton of free games.

AT&T Long Lines Oak Hill Tower, San Jose, CA 2021.

This unusual Brutalist tower was part of the former AT&T terrestrial microwave network that once carried the bulk of US long distance telephone traffic. The (long since disconnected) horn antennas are too big and heavy to remove.

if you're an infrequent command line user -- what text editor do you use if you need to occasionally edit a file on the command line (other than vim/emacs)?

curious about what people use to edit a git commit message etc

if you picked 'other', I'd love to hear what you do in the replies!

chadgeidel,

@b0rk If pico/nano isn't available I would panic (not literally - LOL). I do actually know how to use and exit vim, but as an occasional Linux user, I'm interested in the alternatives when I'm on a box I don't own or an unfamiliar container.

    I just love it when people say "just fix the way people behave" or "just fix the way cities are designed" or "just force everyone to drive electric cars." But these same people rarely have a plan for raising the enormous funds necessarily to do any of this, or a plan for what to do when voters vote out the politicians raising their taxes for such projects. But hey, it's social media.
