You know that thing in scifi where you see the ship at FTL and there's stars streaking past, despite the fact that the speeds required to make that happen would require you moving at speeds capable of crossing the galaxy in minutes?

I found a worse version of that: I saw a letsplay on the "realistic minecraft" modpack, and the stars had visible parallax from the player walking across their island

chadgeidel,
@chadgeidel@mastodon.cloud avatar

@foone At the risk of becoming a 'reply guy' - hasn't the stars streaking past phenomenon been retconned as a pretty display for the folks looking out the windows and not what actual warp looks like?

    I just love it when people say "just fix the way people behave" or "just fix the way cities are designed" or "just force everyone to drive electric cars." But these same people rarely have a plan for raising the enormous funds necessarily to do any of this, or a plan for what to do when voters vote out the politicians raising their taxes for such projects. But hey, it's social media.

    today I'm thinking about the tradeoffs of using git rebase a bit. I think the goal of rebase is to have a nice linear commit history, which is something I like.

    but what are the costs of using rebase? what problems has it caused for you in practice? I'm really only interested in specific bad experiences you've had here -- not opinions or general statements like “rewriting history is bad”

    chadgeidel, (edited )
    @chadgeidel@mastodon.cloud avatar

    @nf3xn I'm sorry I disagree. I use rebase on my branches. Why would that impact any other developer?

    If one is rebasing on a shared branch, that seems like a team decision.

    The tool is there, why disable it?

    REMINDER: ChatGPT, Stable Diffusion, and other large trained neural models are NOT "artificial intelligence", they're just stochastic parrots, remixing and regurgitating what they've been fed. There's no theory-of-mind involved, so no understanding: there's no "there" there. (A real live parrot exhibits more intelligence than this.)

    Don't call it AI; call it parrot-tech. That way you'll have a better perspective on what it can (and can't) do.

    chadgeidel,
    @chadgeidel@mastodon.cloud avatar

    @cstross the part about this that really grinds my gears is technologists "parroting" that these LLMS are "getting even smarter" and treating them like there is some internal understanding of the words they spit out.

    You know what I can guarantee Thor 5 won't be about?

    It won't be about Thor and Valkyrie leaving Earth with the Asgardians in search of a new home planet because the president of the U.S. declared all aliens enemies of Earth that would be killed.

    And it won't be about that, even though that is indeed how Secret Invasion ended and that's the story that would follow.

    Because that show's viewership was low, this will be completely ignored and never referenced again.

    US Liberals are very frustrated: the economy is objectively great under Joe Biden, but peoples’ subjective experience of the economy is bad. Why is there such a gap?

    The lines went up! Why are the rubes still not happy?

    It must be, some of them conclude, that people have been tricked by conservative media:

    https://www.lawyersgunsmoneyblog.com/2023/10/why-is-there-such-a-big-gap-between-the-objective-state-of-the-economy-and-public-perception

    @HeavenlyPossum Anecdote obviously.

    I'm making significantly more than the median US wage (multiples even) and I work in a high-demand industry, so I am an outlier. While I have no problems with housing, transportation, or food - I'm shocked at the number of folks who do have challenges with these things.

    It's absolutely absurd to me that we cannot provide well-paying jobs for every single person who wants one. I have friends who are drowning in debt with little hope to get out.

    chadgeidel,
    @chadgeidel@mastodon.cloud avatar

    @grmpyprogrammer Personal rant:

    This is due to "management" thinking that software development is like an assembly line and each individual is replaceable. If anyone can be replaced, then we don't need to promote anyone, so talent leaves. It's well known that - as a developer - you can boost your income much quicker if you move around every 2 years.

    I hope that one day this industry will realize that computing and software isn't going to be mechanized, because it cannot be mechanized. 1/2

Some of these friends will drive over to my house just to sit me down and yell at me in unhinged rants about how evil VC is, scaring my kids.

    If I think of the most unhinged, hyperbolic, doom and gloom rants about VC that I've ever heard? None of them paint VCs in worse light than Marc's manifesto.

    You know, I really dislike ad blockers from the security perspective. They need exceptionally broad permissions that make the extension a juicy target for attacks. Pop one of the maintainers' Google or Github accounts and own hundreds of millions of people overnight - their email, bank accounts, social media identities, and all that.

    The consequences of simple coding errors are similarly disastrous - and I bet that there are some good UXSS bugs lurking in all that JavaScript.

    For these reasons, I resisted ad blockers for 20+ years, and I endured countless cookie prompts, subscription interstitials, "sponsored results", and unskippable ads. But around 2020, the anti-user patterns on the web have gotten unbearable. And I say this as a person who grew up in the era of auto-playing Flash-based pop-under ads.

    I'm not a security absolutist. It's all about trade-offs: the convenience of using a modern web browser, for example, generally outweighs the risks of living with its massive attack surface. But in the case of ad blockers, you gotta take a hit just to continue to browse in peace. It blows.

    chadgeidel,
    @chadgeidel@mastodon.cloud avatar

    @lcamtuf I have not reviewed the code, but I generally trust the EFF and have used their plugin as my adblocker.

    In my case Privacy Badger combined with modern browser tech is an acceptable trade-off.

    As long as you don't expect security updates, updates for new OSes, updates for features, etc.

    Do you realize that all these things take time and money? Are you willing to pay an up-front cost for these things? For how long?
