Experience being my guide, where there is vulnerable code, there is nearly always one of these conditions in the developer team:

  • Cannot explain the code's intent in the vulnerable case
  • Does not know why legacy code exists or who owns it
  • Is unaware of requirements imposed by the platform
  • Did not intentionally incorporate the vulnerable functionality
  • Is unaware the vulnerable case is implemented

By the way, memory safety is not even slightly the focus of these things.

Brilliant post from @jon on why we probably should complain more about the railway sector’s ways of doing business, than complaining about the aviation sector. #dktrp #dkgreen #dkpol https://jonworth.eu/how-green-are-europes-railways/

brunogirin,
@brunogirin@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@sorenhave @jon agreed, which leads to the ridiculous situation in France where on peak days, especially around Christmas, every single train seat is booked and they have announcements in the stations warning passengers that they won't be able to buy a ticket.

Apparently there is a spam wave happening in the Fediverse but I'm not seeing it at all, on either my well-resourced cooperatively run instance (this account) or my teensy masto.host soccer alt. Has anyone written up what's happening? Ideally explaining what makes the Fediverse vulnerable to this and potential solutions?

It's weird to see lots of complaints but absolutely no hint of the underlying problem.

It appears that the Brits talk about time a lot. They mention cake 3 times more frequently than salad. They talk about the weather about as often as they talk about the pub. They also talk about climate change. And they say the word "happy" slightly more often than they say "sorry" (or rather they did in 2014). https://theconversation.com/tea-weather-and-being-on-time-analysis-of-100-million-words-reveals-what-brits-talk-about-most-222088

I love that “you sound scared” has become a way to shut down critics of AI.

…yes.

yes, I absolutely am scared of it.

No, I’m not ashamed of that.

I don’t hate AI. I don't believe it’s going to destroy us terminator style.

But I’m scared half to hell of the misinformation, political divisions, unemployment, manipulation, spam and deepfake porn and what it’s going to do to our world.

Like it or dislike it, everyone should have a healthy level of fear about what this technology can do.

Press Butter Sand

no, I'm not sure what it means either

this is common in Japan, random English words strung together with no meaning - and unfortunately these brands have a lasting impact on society leading youngsters to think that this is proper English - it's not

my educated guess is . . .

Press - method of prep involves some 'pressing together'

Butter - butter rich pastry

Sand - short for sandwich

it's a fancy biscuit - styled a bit like a custard cream

#PaulIsInJapan

brunogirin,
@brunogirin@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@proactivepaul could "sand" also refer to the pastry, which is presumably a butter shortcrust? We call that pastry "pâte sablée" in French (sand pastry) and the resulting biscuits "sablés" (sandy biscuits) so it could be a literal translation via French or maybe they call that type of pastry in Japanese the same as we do in French?

Hey all, an #introduction post

I grew up in a fairly religious Mexican household and learned early to hide my queerness and not fully express myself. Now as I approach middle age, I want to explore more of my interests, my sexuality, my body, and my gender.

The word xochihua(sho-chi-wah) in Nahua has various meanings: gay, pervert, femme man, flower-bearer. I hope to be all these things, giving y'all your flowers in the process.

Looking forward to sharing more and chatting with everyone!

The skin of your laundry pods dissolve in the washing machine, right?

They dissolve into microplastic.
And wastewater treatment systems have no way to filter that out so the microplastics go straight into streams and the ocean.

Just pour your laundry soap out of a box or bottle.

this git reset --hard safety script from @chx is really cool (he sources it in .bashrc) https://gist.github.com/chx/85db0ebed1e02ab14b1a65b6024dea29

it automatically saves all your unstaged work in a backup commit before doing a git reset --hard

    Warning: Rant
My husband and I are both left-handed.

There are approximately 708 million left-handers in the world.

Over 9% of people are left-handed.

Apparently these numbers do not meet the threshold for inclusion in product design.

My former Mr. Coffee coffeemaker had ambidextrous functionality. The flap over the water reservoir opened to the back, allowing someone to pour water easily from either side.

My new Mr. Coffee coffeemaker includes a design change. The flap over the water reservoir opens to the left, making it almost impossible for me pour water into it.

I just bought a new electric water kettle. The first time I filled it with water, I guessed at the fill limit because I saw no markings inside.

Then I read the instruction manual that referenced the maximum fill line. What? Turns out, I can only see the fill line markings if I fill the kettle while holding it in my right hand. 🤦‍♀️

If you are a product designer, you commit design malpractice if you fail to acknowledge the existence of left-handers.

    End rant.

A black electric water kettle on a kitchen counter. The handle is oriented to the right and the pour spout is on the left. The lid is flipped up. On the inside, stamped into the stainless steel, two fill line markers are visible.

@shansterable yeah, my kettle is the same and I always guess. Frustrating.

Valuable lessons were learned, but not the ones that the mother thought would be learned.🤷🏿‍♂️

    • She learned that millions of Black people haven't been "making it all up" about police mistreatment
    • She learned why US Black folk almost never call the police, for any reason
    • Her son learned that his own mom is not safe. Her lack of understanding of US racism makes her dangerous
    • She's probably going to learn that this does not meet the definition of police misconduct

I have an additional question from the perspective of a non American: why would the police show up as a result of an emergency call for a traffic accident? Shouldn't it be an ambulance that shows up rather than a police car? Or am I misunderstanding how emergency services work in the US?
