OK so it’s almost 4pm. I’m tired. My main options are a) take a short walk to buy some chocolate b) have a bath then get changed into loungewear for the evening c) nap (although it’s probably too late in the day not to affect my sleep tonight). Idk what else I can do

People can’t even grasp the concept of a billionaire. It just feels “rich” to them. But put it in terms of time:

1 million seconds is 12 days
1 billion seconds is 32 years

That’s what an obscene amount of money a billion dollars is.

@aburtch the way I've tried to explain it is: £1 million is roughly the amount a person on the median wage in the UK would earn after tax during a 40 year career. It's a lot but achievable through work.

£1 billion is 1000 times that so you would need 1000 lifetimes of work to earn it.

If we're talking about saving £1m, you'd probably need to have a salary in the top quartile of earners rather than median: high but still achievable through work.

  1. reasonable salary
  2. no generative AI

@pgcd I'd suggest to look for an industry that uses technology, does something positive in the world and requires reliable and auditable data. The climate change sector has quite a few of those businesses, as long as you stay away from carbon credits.

I have spent this morning painstakingly disabling and then re-enabling 2FA on all my online accounts to migrate away from bloody Authy, because they won't provide a pigging export function. Lesson learned. Don't use products that don't let you get your data out.

Thinking about a dynamic I've experienced repeatedly: a dev & I are doing exploratory testing on an app they wrote where I'm an outsider. We find something interesting. I feel the joy of discovery. We solved an interesting puzzle! They experience the grief of a shattered illusion. They thought they'd tested thoroughly! The emotional mismatch can be … awkward.

I have spent some time in shops recently for reasons, among the shops one that claims to be Germany's largest, and have been kinda shocked about the lack of color choice for bike helmets. I always gravitate towards what I then realize is the kids' section 😅
