It just clicked in my brain. What I haven't been able to articulate about why I'm so anxious about Recall. I'm sure others have already gotten to where I am.

It's worse than "a system that tracks everything you do" and stores that info in a basic database that could be easily compromised.
It's worse than a nanny surveillance tool for companies to spy on their employees.

It's inescapable.

It doesn't matter if I make a dozen "how to disable recall" tutorials. The second YOUR data shows up on someone ELSE'S screen, it's in THEIR recall database.

It won't matter if you're a master expert specialist. You can't account for EVERY other computer you've ever interacted with. If a family member looks up an old email with your personal data in it, your data is now at risk.

If THEIR system is compromised YOUR data is at risk.

I just went from "vague feeling of unease" to "actively writing templates to canvas elected officials, regulators, and attorneys general."

I hate sounding like the old guy in the room when I say things like "phone design used to be more fun". I mean, I AM the old guy in the room, but I hate SOUNDING like the old guy complaining about new tech.

Frosted gradients. Laser etched glossy. Bold primary color polycarb. Metal and leather. Different form factors and features... Sigh...

We didn't know how good we had it...

Just finished watching Samsung Unpacked.
"A new era for Mobile AI!"
Ugh.

This is going to be a minor iterative year for Galaxy Fans. The hardware is only getting small changes. The major claims about AI mostly come from Google Gemini (which Google PAINSTAKINGLY kept reiterating would be on "android" phones, not just Galaxy phones).

And we glossed over a lot of the things that might impact folks daily use, like Exynos chips vs Qualcomm chips.

When pocket computers are THIS expensive, I think we need to see more than a handful of translation features and photo editing tools.

We did get a sneak peek at this new Galaxy Donut CG render though. So that was cool.

WAAIT! Really? Threads is ALREADY joining Twitter on rate limits? What the heck???

Google has a mountain of behavior data on me, and probably knows how viciously anti-diamond I am. Yet these ads regularly pop up in my news feed.
Google charging a client for an ad hit that will never materialize into traffic for their company, and frustrating me to make more money on totally fake metrics.
Both consumers and advertisers are getting squeezed for a more enshittified experience.

Dear earbud manufacturers, your next mission to improve noise cancelling is defeating the INSUFFERABLY awful crinkling sound of someone who is functionally incapable of getting a single sunchip out of a bag without crunching up the entire bag.
There's also significant venn diagram overlap with people like this, and folks who schmack chew chips with their mouths open.
I'll pay PREMIUM prices for any headphones that target this directly.

Maybe folks can settle a for me and a friend.
I have a glass measuring cup. I fill it with two cups of water, and microwave it to bring it to a boil. The cup has not come in contact with any other materials or ingredients.
That cup is CLEAN right?
After pouring out the water, it can go back in the cupboard?

I'm as excited about the rumors of improved desktop modes and video out support for the Pixel 8 as the next guy, but we've fielded these kinds of rumors before.

Currently the only phone I have that can run an Android 14 beta, AND has video out, just did this using the desktop mode in Android dev settings.

Which is even more broken than the A13 desktop mode, which was already almost nonfunctional from the A12 mode.

I really WANT Google to give us a Pixel 8 with a proper desktop or tablet large screen mode, but I'm not getting my hopes up until we see the phone in action.

Where the person using the @ Music account on had built up 11 million followers, and Musk wanted it, so he just took it away.
Even better, offered the owner replacement Twitter accounts that were actively being used. 🤦‍♂️

What if you could own a stylus enabled Windows 11 Laptop, that was ALSO a Linux PC, and it was ALSO an Android tablet, and it cost less than an iPad Air (with keyboard), but had twice as much storage as the iPad AND you could upgrade its SSD when you needed more space?

If you're looking to buy a new SSD you might want to shop one soon. Samsung is cutting back on NAND production and prices are expected to rise in Q4.

At least this isn't Samsung collaborating with other companies to fix prices again. It's just "regular" scummy capitalism.

Google is reportedly cancelling their AR project Iris. I REALLY HOPE Iris was their mixed reality ski goggle headset, and not the simpler glasses shown here demoing real time translation.
https://youtu.be/lj0bFX9HXeE

I owned the Focals by North glasses, and I can't tell you how transformative that experience was. It was NOT any kind of real AR. It was a simple heads up display, with a UI like a smartwatch, but at eye level. It was amazing.

I truly believe we're skipping an INCREDIBLY important step trying to race to magic sci-fi AR. So many interactions with our technology would be wonderfully streamlined with a simple graphic or text at eye level.

Here's the article on Google Iris https://www.businessinsider.com/google-ar-iris-augmented-reality-smart-glasses-2023-6

Apple was never going to "save" VR.
We've spent the last decade giving Apple an unlimited runway of speculation and hype to bring a face computer to market.

https://somegadgetguy.com/b/3si

Instead of doing a better job earnestly and fairly covering the tech along the way, properly educating consumers on what these things can do, now even Vision Pro can't live up to the media's imagined narrative of Apple.

Apple did nothing to earn a DECADE of media support for XR products, but think of all the projects that were criticized for not living up to some kind of imaginary Sci-Fi standard.

"Wait for gen 2 or gen 3 instead!"

Techies expect everyone else to lift off like a helicopter, but Apple gets UNLIMITED runway...

Yeah, Apple has had a few advertising missteps in the past ("wHatZ uH cOmpUTer???), but this 'Crush' commercial is one of the darkest mistakes I think they've ever made. It feels like the intro to Fallout style dystopian story.
A far cry from the optimism of the 1984 commercial, Apple has become what they once rallied against...

Reddit (valued around $10 billion in 2021) signed a deal only getting $60 million a year to let a (yet unnamed) company scrape all its user data to train AI.
