Tell me a silly/funny childhood story!

I'll start:

One time in Sunday School, the teacher was talking about the difference between humans and animals, and mentioned that Animals had Tails and humans didn't. I let her know this was not true, because my Dad had a tail, just in the front, instead of the back. The teacher was silent for several seconds, and tried to correct me in a church appropriate way, but I doubled down, and insisted that my little brothers also had front tails too. This got so heated that the teacher had to go get my parents to take me out of Sunday School.

EdwardTheDuck,
@EdwardTheDuck@horrorhub.club avatar

@RickiTarr Gives new meaning to "tailbones" 😏

When I was five, I thought I started the Loma Prieta earthquake. We used to go to this playground with a boat climbing structure, complete with a rope "anchor." One day I wanted to see what would happen if I pulled the rope. I did - suddenly everything started shaking. I was anxious even then, as my first thought wasn't of my or any other park goers safety. Rather I imagined a breaking news story shaming the little boy who pulled the rope. 🫨😂

We had another freedom shooting today, in Iowa this time. For those of you who don’t live in the U.S., we safeguard our freedom here by ensuring that anyone who thinks some person/people need killing is able to shoot them immediately, and every day someone decides to celebrate this basic freedom.

EdwardTheDuck,
@EdwardTheDuck@horrorhub.club avatar

@JuliusGoat Don't forget the traditional greeting of "hopes & prayers." While I don't observe, I know enough that this phrase somehow concludes the ritual. 😬

Today's theme is Normal!

You can take this test to see how "Normal" you are, and also how radically left wing you are! LOL Please share the results if you feel like it, or do nothing at all, because it really doesn't matter!

EdwardTheDuck,
@EdwardTheDuck@horrorhub.club avatar

@RickiTarr For context I often self-identify as a "milquetoast cishet white guy" and consider myself liberal not left-wing. I think this checks out? Bummer that (I suspect) wanting to spend time with your kids and pets is considered a "female" trait. Shouldn't everyone want strong relationships with loved ones? 🤷🏻‍♂️

@arstechnica Ew. I don't understand why there's an "it might not be illegal" element here. Distributing explicit images of classmates or colleagues - however they were generated - is textbook sexual harassment.

@TexasObserver @josephinelee Thanks again for your reporting. Sorry I got a little out of pocket there.

One of the most troubling elements is that the USPS seems to be blatantly falsifying data. Is this something NALC or OSHA is looking into, or would Congress have to get involved? (Which... isn't likely to happen. 😅)

@GottaLaff @Grant_M While I share the concern generally, I take comfort in this sorta already happening a few years ago when a DIFFERENT Robert Kennedy Jr primaried Doug Jones in the Alabama Senate special election and didn't even get 20% of the vote. https://ballotpedia.org/Robert_Kennedy_Jr._(Alabama)

I also appreciate that the Biden campaign is taking these "independent candidate" grifters seriously.

Twitter/X "will collect information about the location of users and their private messages, which may constitute mass surveillance."
https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2023/09/global-xs-new-policy-risks-violating-right-to-privacy-for-millions/

EdwardTheDuck,
@EdwardTheDuck@horrorhub.club avatar

@rticks @ssamulczyk @andrewstroehlein My dude, I agree with you and I'm still begging: please don't do this. Comparing modern American political parties to those of a historical era in another country does a disservice to those who lost their lives then & now. Let's keep our eyes on the prize, solidarity with those on the margins against encroaching fascism & ever-present surveillance. And to state the obvious, posting profiles to invite harassment is just gross.

EdwardTheDuck,
@EdwardTheDuck@horrorhub.club avatar

@rticks @ssamulczyk @andrewstroehlein So in a roundabout way we returned to why some people still use Twitter despite everything.

There is no sustainable alternative to voting for Democrats/leaving Twitter if you want to keep fascists out of power in the US/participate in a global fan movement. Decentralized models like mutual aid/Mastodon, while worthwhile, exist outside the system by design & can't scale up to be accessible for normies.

My goal is to welcome these people, not proselytize.

EdwardTheDuck,
@EdwardTheDuck@horrorhub.club avatar

@rticks @ssamulczyk @andrewstroehlein To be clear, I deleted my Twitter account earlier this year & lobbied for my work to do the same. (And I actually like Democrats a lot.)

While it frustrates me many choose to stay, the network effect is real. At the end of the day all I can do is support alternative models & lobby for them where I can, so one day they can become sustainable or even new norm. Until then, let's promote harm reduction. Lambasting others who have no options... doesn't do that.

RickiTarr, to random
@RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

Y'all remember the Wild West that was the early internet? So, after Napster got shut down, file sharing didn't stop, you know what it did? That's right kids, let's say it all together: DECENTRALIZED! This protected those sites from being sued and shut down. It's interesting to once again be moving around in decentralized networks again 20+ years later. The past and the future are colliding in such interesting ways.

EdwardTheDuck,
@EdwardTheDuck@horrorhub.club avatar

@RickiTarr A UX critique of Napster & Limewire was bad information. While far less harmful than say, today's election interference, fan sites for They Might Be Giants & Weird Al had to keep lengthy lists of "these songs are not by this artist" alongside their real discographies as any comedy/parody song would be misattributed to them. Happened a lot with pop punk too. I have MP3s that are old enough to drink and still don't know & maybe have no way of ever knowing who's really behind them.

The Mitch McConnell incident is reviving questions about America's aging leadership. FiveThirtyEight recently reported that Congress is older than it's ever been: https://flip.it/jEOVef

Do you think there should be a maximum age limit for president and Congress?

EdwardTheDuck,
@EdwardTheDuck@horrorhub.club avatar

@NewsDesk No. As others have said, term limits for all federal offices (including the judiciary, which is arguably even more important as a lifetime, unelected position) would be a more organic way to bring in "new blood."

At 53 years old, John Fetterman is far younger than the Senate's median age of 65. Yet, he was "unfit to serve" due to health struggles. I deeply admire his perseverance & perspective, which is valuable, and worry arbitrary age/health limits would shut voices like that out.

I'm pretty disgusted by all the hate being directed here on #Mastodon at five newly dead people who very likely have families and friends and others who cared deeply about them. While there is literally no amount of money that could have convinced me to ride in that thing, having a bit of respect for the dead, or at least for those who loved them, would be a much better look for Mastodon in my opinion.

EdwardTheDuck,

@lauren Thanks for posting this! I was all set to come on here with some snarky eat-the-rich nonsense and then I saw your post following another expressing basic sympathy for the families and quickly changed my tune.

Too often, I assume afflicting the comfortable is synonymous with comforting the afflicted. Thanks for the reminder that mean-spiritedness is, well, mean, no matter who the target is.
