I know I can come across as a Very Cranky Kitten but if you'd like to learn how to navigate and install any Linux distro I would be perfectly happy to help you however I can! Letting me know your needs (gaming? art? writing? communication?), level of tech expertise and comfort (automatic updates? etc), needs and workflow, I can almost certainly help you choose and install something!
Also as much as I have unreciprocated beef with Canonical this would be a fantastic time for them to modernize and resurrect their "email/mail us and we'll send you a CD-ROM with Ubuntu" program they did ages ago with "email/mail/text us and we'll send you a USB stick"
"Our plan is to grow the Ubuntu Desktop team by at least another 50% over the next year and we are opening a range of positions across all levels of seniority in the coming weeks. At Canonical we think the future is bright for the Linux desktop and if you have the passion and skills to be at the cutting edge of performance, security, immutability and accessibility then we want to hear from you."
I find it somewhat annoying and concerning that an essential #security tool like #fail2ban is broken on #ubuntu#linux 24.04 #noble since the end of February and there still is no update in sight.
I think I've whinged here before about my difficulties with #Shotwell after switching from #Ubuntu to #Debian. Well, I've fixed it, and I've published a gist in case anyone wants to do the same.
I'm excited to go eat some lobster rolls... err, I mean that I am excited to announce that I will speaking at DevConf.US, August 14th - 16th, in Boston, USA 🦞
I will also be staffing an Ubuntu community booth as well alongside my fellow yinzer @AKernelPanic. If you're in the Boston-area and interested with helping with the booth, or picking up some limited-edition Noble Numbat swag, check the link below! Hope to see you there! 👇

I decided to check if #Linux gaming distros gave you an edge in terms of performance, compared to something #Ubuntu based, and of a specific gaming distro would perform better than another.
Since I had a @tuxedocomputers mini ITX desktop on hand to review, I decided to combine the two, so I checked whether gaming distros are better for gaming, with 4 game benchmarks I ran on the Atlas S:
Seriously looking into Linux for my PC because Microsoft and their overzealous approach to AI is making me nervous as heck.
I'm going to settle on Ubuntu as my familiarity with that Linux distro is high enough; I do need to check for any major changes with CLI commands, reworking of OS features, and the like before switching over. I don't want any surprises.
Over the next few days, I will back-up anything I need in the future digitally.
So I've just been doing some tidying in the garage and I found this old #Compaq#Netbook. I've put it on charge, but do we think it will boot, and what OS do we think it's running?
The efficiency boost is honestly mind blowing. And that is with so many keystrokes to wrap my head around. Absolutely worth the money and lets me work at least four times as fast as with the previous setups.
Would I have liked to keep on using Linux? Yes but at this point if one is doing more than just browsing the web and reading E-Mails it is very hard to recommend.
@WestphalDenn I just bought a #Lenovo#Legion9 and had the opposite experience.
I keep hearing people say things about #Linux v #Windows which aren't true, and in a recent discussion they turned out to be out of date opinions from someone not using it.
Obviously you were, but I take issue that it's only good for basic tasks. I do all sorts and it just gets better while Windows degrades and spys.
W11 cursor was jerky, sending all cicks home. Noticeably faster when I switched to #Ubuntu 24.
