👊I know bookmarks!
Bookmark a post via an icon or 3 dots flyout menu to return to something useful.
✊Follow liberally!
More follows has zero algorithm penalty here. Is no algorithm. More people I follow, more interesting my feeds get. There are good tools for management.
⭐is the❤️button but only tells the author you like their post, nobody else.
🔁Boost🔁 moves info around.
There is no algorithm, we choose & not some algorithm under corporate control. We choose by 🔁boosting🔁 posts and by using #hashtags.
If I put hashtags more at the bottom of a post it is kind to those using screen readers, partially sighted, blind etc. Fediverse has a good reputation for inclusion, we must keep it going.
Last Friday a friend of mine had a run-in with the administrators of mastodon.nz. I've written up my thoughts in the hopes that it will spark useful and constructive conversations. Please share with others.
Hello! This is my #introduction post as I'm new here, having just transferred over from another instance. I'm here as part of the #TwitterMigration, but I'm still on Twitter too, spreading trans and leftie goodness until Twitter disappears.
I'm non-binary and I live in Wales, in an area where I can do lots of walking and taking photos - although they're often a bit blurry, as I'm awful with technology, and prone to taking pictures in low light levels when my phone can't quite handle it :blobSobGlasses:
I'm a sci-fi fan, mostly into Star Trek, Star Wars and Doctor Who. I also adore Good Omens, OFMD, Stranger Things, and Lord of the Rings and its associated stories.
I also knit and crochet sometimes. If I ever get around to finishing anything, I may post photos!
I look forward to tooting with you all on this lovely instance! :heartPride:
Several weeks into the #TwitterMigration it seems clear to me the value of Mastodon is not that it is a Twitter replacement, but that it is a gateway technology to decentralization. Mastodon has flaws, I'm not claiming it's perfect, but many criticisms I've seen stem from expecting centralized services from a decentralized structure. It's up to us to try and explain the differences and set expectations for what alternative services can look like.
The thing about Twitter is that it really lacks a lot of the features you'd expect from a true Mastodon replacement.
For example, there's no way to edit your toots (which they, confusingly call "tweets"—let's face it, it's a bit of a silly name that's difficult to take seriously).
"Tweets" can't be covered by a content warning. There's no way to let the poster know you like their tweet without also sharing it, and no bookmark feature.
There's no way to set up your own instance, and you're basically stuck on a single instance of Twitter. That means there's no community moderators you can reach out to to quickly resolve issues. Also, you can't de-federate instances with a lot of problematic content.
It also doesn't Integrate with other fediverse platforms, and I couldn't find the option to turn the ads off.
Really, Twitter has made a good start, but it will need to add a lot of additional features before it gets to the point where it becomes a true Mastodon replacement for most users.
A mon tour de proposer un petit tutoriel en français sur Mastodon, ses principes et son vocabulaire. J'espère que ça pourra aider les nouveaux et nouvelles venu·es (dont je suis !). N'hésitez pas à booster :)
Full-time carer for my mum. Still trying to dodge covid so don’t get out so much these days. Mostly posting pics from my walks or swims. Interested in:
I've got a lot of things in my bio, but most recently finished a PhD (after a VERY long haul) which began in Media (indie film history) and morphed into Management (organizational change). Work at a uni in program and project management (mostly IT) and am full stack hobbyist dev (mostly Python.)
Best to not expect anything particularly academic or intelligent from me though - you'll get boosts, some artsy stuff, and dumb jokes. Occasionally hair pics.
#twittermigration
I'm a #FSB (Foreign Service Brat) and #3CK (3rd Culture Kid). I do #Theatre, and am a #Techie and a #Designer. I got into the #SCA and #Cosplay because it allowed me to make costumes without the time requirements of being part of a show!
My most recent (coming up on year 6) obsession is my #Glowforge laser.
I'm a red headed, right handed, #Ice Hockey addicted, happily married, #polymath 😄
I have no idea whether in time I will have the same breadth and diversity of interactions here in the fediverse that I am used to from the birdsite (and obviously there are some interactions I would rather not replicate).
But I find it extraordinary how fast a part of my personal social media network is reconstituting here. And I love it in part because it frankly feels empowering.
Several people that I talked to in the last few days about the #Twittermigration including @cfiesler mentioned @doctorow's point about how social media companies essentially hold us hostage through our social networks:
"The problem with social media is that they used our presence as bait to lure in our friends and vice-versa and now they won’t let us go without extracting as high a price as possible for our disloyalty." (Read his great piece here: https://doctorow.medium.com/how-to-leave-dying-social-media-platforms-9fc550fe5abf).
