An unlikely cycling revolution is happening in Edmonton, Alberta. Despite freezing temps, lots of sprawl and an economy built on pulling oil out of the Albertan tar sands, the Canadian city is in the midst of a four-year, $100 million CAD investment in active transportation that will connect the city with a network of high-quality, protected bike lanes.
"When Driving is Not an Option with Anna Zivarts."
One-third of people in the US can’t drive. Those tens of millions of people are often invisible to planners and elected officials, and that’s why Anna Letitia Zivarts, a low-vision nondriver and activist has written a new book, "When Driving Is Not an Option: Steering Away from Car Dependency." We talked with Anna about building a system that works for everyone.
Why do alt-history people never focus on infrastructure or innovation? What would have happened had bikes been invented centuries before cars instead of around the same time? How different would the built environment and our culture have looked?...
@BastingChemina Biking is still faster than driving for many short trips, since you avoid congestion, routes can be more direct and you can park closer to your destination. Under one mile it is probably quicker to bike than drive. Under two miles if you live where cars clog the streets.
Walked around my garden and it was quiet, so grabbed a cuppa to come sit on my porch and since asshole with a noise maker muffler is idling a block over.
I see trucks like this daily in Toronto, accomplishing little, but blocking our sidewalks and making our residential streets more dangerous. Usually their bed is covered to avoid … getting wet, maybe. It is exceedingly rare to spot a truck like this doing anything actually requiring the size of its engine and wheels.
Holy crap. In the EU, fuel consumption monitoring devices are required on new cars. They studied over 10% of all cars sold in 2021 and turns out they use way more fuel, and generate way more CO2, than anybody thought. Nearly a quarter more. Plug-in Hybrids do poorly too.
This means our projections about getting cars off the road for the climate crisis is hugely undercounting the effects. More rail, more e-bikes, more electric, faster.
Excellent episode from @TheWarOnCars about how auto insurance doesn't really cover all the harms from car crashes and how those costs are offloaded to others, especially the victims.
I was really surprised to learn that victims of car crashes often don't receive any compensation from drivers even when they have liability insurance because of how the law advantages health insurance companies over victims
"The researchers pointed to vehicle traffic, coal and industrial emissions, particularly from brick kilns, as major sources of the region’s pollution."
It's never been more expensive to insure a car, but coverage barely covers the full personal and societal harm of car crashes, something we all pay for whether we drive or not — and that traffic violence victims subsidize with their life and limb.
Look, our podcast is growing but as much as we'd like to do it we are still not powerful enough to be able to add a kill switch to all new vehicles. Sorry, Adam Carolla and Dr. Drew.
It's not Rocket Science!
We know how to fix #CarDependency in USA cities. It's mostly a #Planning problem.
If we converted Shopping Malls into High Density, Mixed Use areas, not only would they become 10x more valuable and way more productive they would raise more taxes for local Governments. #Urbanism#TheWarOnCars#Cycling#Transit https://culdesac.com/
Our friend, Council Michael Janz wearing a The War on Cars “toque” on CTV Edmonton is the best thing we’ve seen. That's some real political courage right there.
Recorded live at Caveat on the Lower East Side of Manhattan on January 31st, our latest episode features Bernie Wagenblast, the voice of the New York City subway system.
Bernie shares her story and some laughs on stage with The War on Cars!
What if bikes had been invented earlier?
