It’s a nice #SunnyDay outside and it really feels like spring. The #bees are busy making use of the #flowers, while the flowers are busy making use of the bees.
The #UK#ElectricyDemand is currently 32 GW and of that, 25.2% is coming from #SolarEnergy, 17.1% is coming from #WindEnergy, 16.8% is coming from #NuclearEnergy and 9.9% is coming from #Biomass and only 7% is coming from #Gas. There is also a fair amount coming from continental Europe through the various interconnections.
"The extreme weather. The melting glaciers. The weirdly warm oceans. They’re all the product of global warming, which is being driven by the release of the three most important heat-trapping gases: carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide.
And according to a new study from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, emissions of those three greenhouse gases continued to surge last year to historic highs."
Researchers find the link between human activity and shifting #WeatherPatterns in western North America https://phys.org/news/2024-04-link-human-shifting-weather-patterns.html “Simply put, the study shows that the rise in temperatures caused by #GreenhouseGases is changing how air moves in the atmosphere. This, in turn, affects the weather patterns that influence winter conditions in western North America and contribute to recent more frequent extreme weather events. This research thus highlights the urgent need to address #ClimateChange.”
Scientists confirm record highs for 3 most important heat-trapping gases
The global concentration of #CO2, the most important and prevalent of the #GreenhouseGases emitted by human activity, rose to an average of 419 ppm in the atmosphere in 2023 while #methane a powerful if shorter-lasting greenhouse gas, rose to an average of 1922 ppb. Levels of #NitrousOxide, the third most significant human-caused warming emission, climbed slightly to 336 parts per billion.
The nation’s southern #border has long been a hot spot for illegal smuggling of drugs, weapons & migrants. But what about illicitly transporting greenhouse gases that cause #ClimateChange?
A California man was arrested Mon on charges of doing exactly that & is facing the first prosecution under a 2020 US #law aimed at phasing out some of the most potent greenhouse gases on the planet.
I know, I needed to edit this post for adhering better to the #PascalCase convention.
Also, it fit in nicely with my re-boost today of the #BigOil fiasco background, inspired by the new allegations that even 👉#Shell's #CarbonCapture plant might be a complete fraud, as it possibly even emits way more #GreenhouseGases than it captures!👈
“Alberta's #oilsands operations produce far more potentially harmful #AirPollutants than are officially reported, with the daily output on par with those from gridlocked megacities like Los Angeles..
measured concentrations of organic carbon emissions in the air by flying overhead and taking samples.
The researchers found levels that were between 20 and 64 times higher than those reported by industry”
“The findings build on previous research that has shown other types of pollutants, including #GreenhouseGases such as #CarbonDioxide and #Methane, are also higher than the reported totals.”
I recently got quite some flak for discussing what #Starlink satellites burning up in the atmosphere after their planned lifetime of 6 years could do to the stratosphere. Adding tons of aluminium and other elements as fine aerosol particles. Well. New research has just been published:
@jwildeboer so these things last only 6 years? That means a never ending stream of rocket launches to keep the constellation operating. A humungous lot of resources and greenhouse gases in this and all the whole thing looks totally unsustainable. Time to stop. #greenhousegases#climatechange#ClimatePollution#starlink#AstroPollution
"Environmentalists are gearing up for their next giant climate fight: They want to force a showdown with the Biden administration over the massive expansion of #US#NaturalGas exports.
More than two dozen new or expansion projects are under construction or under consideration. Opponents say that buildout far exceeds what is needed and will further burden communities of color on the #GulfCoast and other parts of the country."
"A growing boom of #US#LNG projects could add the equivalent emissions of 675 coal-fired power plants.
If all planned terminals go ahead, it would result in an extra 3.2bn tons of #GreenhouseGases each year, close to the annual #emissions of the entire #EuropeanUnion and severely imperiling hopes of avoiding catastrophic global heating."
It's a global #climate solution — if it can get past #ConspiracyTheories and #NIMBYs
"But this old idea of areas with many amenities close by has now evolved into an #UrbanPlanning model gaining popularity with politicians around the world. Moreno says that's because it not only improves quality of life, but 15-minute cities can also reduce cars' planet-warming #GreenhouseGases."
