There’s a cool little Great Lakes shipping museum nearby In Marquette’s old water works building; I have the hoodie to prove it. Marquette Harbor Lighthouse, Michigan. Photo by Lerro Photography. #LighthousesOfMastodon #GreatLakes #LakeSuperior
Toxic forever chemicals are dramatically on the rise in Lake Michigan and have been detected in all of the Great Lakes.
The new study found airborne concentrations of PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — are much higher near Chicago, Detroit and other urban areas. Previous research recorded similar patterns for other toxic chemicals. #ClimateChange#GreatLakes#Chicago#Detroit#Michigan
#Michigan bound. The boys & I are loading up to head east for the summer. Who would not want this setting if it was an option? Dreading this drive; it does not get easier as I age! And there is no realistic option for not going through at least some of the MagaT bastion of #Texas. And I'll be darned happy when that is over. Glad I'm not pregnant. 🤦♀️
Stand by for sunset photos from the #GreatLakes. 😃 🙃
Michigan’s North Manitou Shoal Light station was the last manned offshore lighthouse on the Great Lakes at the time it was automated in 1980. Locals refer to it as the “Crib Lighthouse.” Photo by Sheen Watkins. #LighthouseOfMastodon #GreatLakes #LakeMichigan
“A beautiful, stoic light that guards our ships in the Manitou Passageway. She can be seen from many spots along the shoreline … even Northport. This was my first time to be up close. Those reflections …” - photographer Sheen Watkins

"Maximum #ice cover for the year usually peaks in late February or early March and, on average, the #GreatLakes experience a basin-wide maximum in annual ice coverage of about 53%."
This year, it's in the low single digits.
Communities around the lakes have strong economic ties to the ice levels and the changes in ice cover can have big impacts on the people living there."
The Marine Museum of the Great Lakes is an amazing place to visit when in #Kingston, ON. The recent acquisition of the SS Keewatin just makes it better. The volunteers who maintain this facility's operations definitely deserve this award. #GreatLakes#History
The ice cover on the lakes is going to be a huge problem. Even locally, on Higgins Lake, we have little ice cover and there were already problems with the lake level before this season.
It is the end of the first week of Feb 2024 and Lake Superior is practically ice-free, and even embayments like Thunder Bay are only partially frozen. This occurs about half the years now.
My friend Jay Austin says it well:
"the mildly unnerving aspect of this is that if you look prior to about 1998, we didn't really have these sort of low ice years."
This is going to have a radical effect on lake chemistry, algal biology and fish survival.
I loved visiting lighthouses in the Great Lakes region! It's such a beautiful experience, no matter the time of year. If you're looking for wall art for your home, office, or waiting room, be sure to check out my gallery.
Chicago action in solidarity with Appalachians Against Pipelines
"A Bank of America branch was locked and windows wheatepasted with flyers containing links to the bank’s abhorrent acts of cruelty. ... Block every path! No pipelines through Appalachia, or anywhere! Solidarity forever! Stop Cop City and Free Palestine!"
Ice has starting to appear in the St Clair River at Port Huron. Flowing from Lake Huron. It won’t be long before there is a lot of ice and the Canadian and US coastguard icebreakers will be out working. It’s fab watching them break the ice.
It might be a very icy year if the cold snap endures. It’s to be -14°C at Port Huron/Sarnia today.
