Whatever #JoeBiden's pious word the US #oil sector does not look to be stepping back from record production anytime soon... indeed, the oil price is being kept low at a time of #OPEC capacity limits but this US production.

#Exxon are planning 10% uplift in production, but they (as the cart shows) are not alone.

This does not look like the twilight of #fossilfuels before a #geeentransition to address the #climatecrisis does it?

At #COP28, the CEO of #Exxon tells the FT that the #greentransition 'is not limited to just wind, solar and EVs,... Carbon capture is going to play a role. We’re good at that. We know how to do it, we can contribute. Hydrogen will play a role. Biofuels will play a role'!

Of course, despite the #technologies of renewable power being now proven, because the #fossilfuels firms are 'good at' other untried & difficult technologies they want to emphasise those.

#FossilFuels are the problem!

So, apparently, this #Lithium project didn't pan out because the brine was so corrosive, it destroyed the equipment used to process it. YIKES! #Exxon is planning on using a similar process (closed loop extraction) in #Arkansas.

General Motors looks to California for its next lithium supply

The US automaker is investing in closed-loop extraction from the Salton Sea.

Jonathan M. Gitlin - 7/2/2021,

"CTR's Hell's Kitchen project will extract lithium salts from geothermal brine in the Salton Sea. By using heat from the brine to power the processing, it hopes to produce 15,000 tons of lithium carbonate and 49.9 MW of energy in 2023."

Some questions about the plan to mine lithium in south Arkansas

By Sam Watson
November 14, 2023

"What are the environmental impacts here? This question is difficult to answer at this point. Normal lithium extraction is quite #environmentally damaging; it often involves treating brine containing lithium with sulfuric acid and letting the liquid evaporate in open pools, leaving lithium behind. #Exxon stated that they’d use something called 'direct lithium extraction.' There are several versions of this process, but we don’t yet know what Exxon will use. All of them have different environmental impacts, some more severe than others. The key here will be regulation and monitoring, but we have serious concerns here. The Division of Environmental Quality may not have capacity for this kind of continuous monitoring and the state’s friendliness to #OilAndGas makes us worried that upfront regulations to protect the #environment and people of south Arkansas will be lacking at best."

This is Darren Woods, the current CEO of Exxon. He doesn't want you to think of him as a villain.

He wants you to "consider all options, even those that don't align with your ideology," while ruling out options that don't align with his free market ideology.

He wants "market-based solutions," but he also wants taxpayer investments in technologies that would keep Exxon in business--like carbon capture.

He says we need to "get real," while proposing that no slowdown of international trade is permissible.

"Oil and gas companies reliably provide affordable products essential to modern life. Making them into villains is easy. But it does nothing – absolutely nothing – to accomplish the goal of reducing emissions," he says, without presenting any evidence that recognizing the evil of Exxon and its human agents hurts the goal of reducing emissions.

I bet he has an address and all that stuff.

What #BigOil knew about #ClimateChange, in its own words

by Benjamin Franta, October 28, 2021

"Back in 1979, #Exxon had privately studied options for avoiding #GlobalWarming. It found that with immediate action, if the industry moved away from #FossilFuels and instead focused on #renewable energy, fossil fuel pollution could start to decline in the 1990s and a major #ClimateCrisis could be avoided.

"But the industry didn't pursue that path. Instead, colleagues and I recently found that in the late 1980s, Exxon and other oil companies coordinated a global effort to dispute #ClimateScience, block fossil fuel controls and keep their products flowing.

"We know about it through internal documents and the words of industry insiders, who are now beginning to share what they saw with the public. We also know that in 1989, the fossil fuel industry created something called the Global Climate Coalition—but it wasn't an environmental group like the name suggests; instead, it worked to sow doubt about climate change and lobbied lawmakers to block clean energy legislation and climate treaties throughout the 1990s.

"For example, in 1997, the Global Climate Coalition's chairman, William O'Keefe, who was also an executive vice president for the American Petroleum Institute, wrote in the Washington Post that 'Climate scientists don't say that burning oil, gas and coal is steadily warming the earth,' contradicting what the industry had known for decades. The fossil fuel industry also funded think tanks and biased studies that helped slow progress to a crawl."

BIG

For TOO long, TOO many corporations, most if not all, equated support for oil and fossil fuels with their own corporate goals.

A LOT them have decided, Its NOT pro-business to support oil, its pro catastrophic losses, increased costs and damaged customers.

And A LOT of companies are realizing, for the bottom line, for stockholders, for their own lives, support for oil as "One Of Us" is OVER.

131 companies demand a global deal to phase out fossil fuels.

Socratease,

@kevinrns it's good to point this out because more people should be aware of those facts. Thanks for the interesting exchange of ideas!

Unfortunately antisocial behavior is often a byproduct of the #corporatocracy. It's rampant in every industry. That's why people often rail against the #meat and #dairy industries, or the #mining industry, or the #pharmaceutical industry, to name a few.

Corporations used to be held accountable for their behavior. Their charters were revoked if they failed to benefit society. That kept corporations in check.

Now through relentless lobbying and legal maneuvers, corporations now have more rights than actual human persons, compounded by the fact that they never die. It's hardly fair and easy to see why we are in this #conundrum.

They are humanity's Frankenstein - out of control, with no allegiance to real people or life in general.

#Exxon is but one example.
