THREAD: I made a series of images for an Instagram post I made about migrating to the fediverse. I figured I'd share with anyone else who wants to use, so I included some blank template versions too. DM if you'd like the Adobe Illustrator file so you can make your own edits. And please, comment if I got anything wrong so I can correct it.

BlueSky is cosplaying
https://rys.io/en/167.html

> Almost exactly six months after got taken over by a petulant edge lord, people seem to be done with grieving the communities this disrupted and connections they lost, and are ready, eager even, to jump head-first into another toxic relationship. This time with BlueSky.

tl;dr:

  • seems designed to get secondarily centralized in the "reach" layer (as they call it)
  • moderation is an afterthought

Something that bugs me so much when people complain about the complexity of Mastodon or decentralized services, is that they've done it already.

Email. It's just like fucking email.
You choose a provider, you get an address, and then you share that address with others.

That's it. That's all there's too it.
You change email providers? You share your new address.

A new episode of the #Wikimove #podcast came out earlier this month, focusing on #decentralization within the #Wikimedia movement

https://www.wikimedia.de/wikimove-site/podcast/episode-11-decentralization/

"Our guests explain where these concepts [of decentralization and subsidiarity] came from, and why they are central to the future governance model. We explore what decentralization could mean in practice for areas such as fundraising, software development and advocacy."

“We believe it’s important for Mastodon to be good as a product on its own merits, and not just because of its ideology. If we only attract people who already care about decentralization, our ability to make decentralization mainstream becomes that much harder. Making the onboarding process as easy as possible helps new users get past the sign-up process and more quickly engage with others.”

Adblockers and alternative frontend will only get you so far in this. It's literally just a matter of time until step it to yet another level. Want some real change? Stop giving them power. #Boycott these fuckers.

Bring down closed data silos like #YouTube. Empower #foss federated platforms like #peertube.

Very useful analysis from @mmasnick about , , and .. and messaging in general.

is critical to prevent the kind of mess and chaos we are seeing with Twitter right now.. and have seen with other sites, too.

It's truly amazing to watch how #tilvids has taken off almost 100% due to the #Mastodon community. We're currently sitting at #10 position on PeerTube's instance list for user count, which has jumped dozens of spots over the last year. 💙

Only 200-ish away from reaching #9 too! Feel free to join today if you want to be able to like and comment on the amazing videos our creator community is sharing! 🙌

Safe Network Update 07 December, 2023 (safenetforum.org)

This week we’ve all hands on deck, filling holes, bashing in nails and replacing rotten timbers in the previous testnet so we can launch the thing of beauty that is the ReduceConnectionsNet, which thus far seems to be sailing along pretty nicely. So what were those things? Well, we’d gone from requiring three verified spends...

https://mastodon.social being down, presumably because they're testing some of their latest features they're working on, and in the process kicking 1 million out of the 11.8 million people* (thanks @nemobis for the correction) from the fediverse is a good reminder to check out other Mastodon instances, or even other fediverse services and platforms.

The SAFE Network: A Deep Dive into the Wisdom of Natural Systems (metaquestions.me)

As we venture into the realm of decentralised systems, it’s crucial to heed the lessons that nature offers. Our planet has spent over 4 billion years perfecting systems that are both efficient and resilient, without the need for unnatural constructs like network-wide consensus or total order. By embracing these principles, the...

Safe Network #Testnet NoClientGossipDiscovery [24/11/23 ] (safenetforum.org)

Hot on the heals of NoClientGossip, we’ve a tweaked version of the code which aims to improve the network discovery setup. As mentioned in the update, it looks like some nodes did not know enough of the network, leading to assumptions of responsibility over more and more data, and so filling up and failing to store new data....

Safe Network Update 14 December, 2023 (safenetforum.org)

Welcome to the last update of the year. We’re happy to be finishing on a high, with the CloserNet testnet and the community helping us check our fix for what we hope will prove to be the last major bug in basic data handling. We were making an assumption that nodes were being ordered by closeness to our node, whereas this was...
