Today marks the first #anniversary of my #Mastodon journey and in those 365 days it's become my main social media platform. I hardly use Twitter anymore besides keeping up with those creators that I couldn't convince to switch. Tumblr was already pretty much dead last year and still is. So 90% of my social media time goes to Mastodon and I don't think I've been more active on a social network than I have here.
I like the sense of #community. I don't think it's complicated. I really enjoy it. 😊
Now is the time to form smaller, independent social media communities: Start a Slack, Discord, Discourse Forum, a Wordpress group blog for a small group with mutual interests. My experience suggests you need a critical mass of a dozen regular posters, and out of 100 invites, 50-70 will try it, 20-40 will stay, and a dozen regulars will keep it alive while you try to grow. It helps to have a strong mutual interest. #OnlineCommunities
@hrheingold Reminds me of (potentially apocryphal) advice from Kurt Vonnegut:
"What should young people do with their lives today? Many things, obviously. But the most daring thing is to create stable communities in which the terrible disease of loneliness can be cured.”
Since it's getting a burst in attention again, I want to share my flywheel theory of community engagement. #OpenSource#community efforts aren't self-sustaining by magic, they require active work to keep going. The flywheel theory is my explanation for what I've seen in #Fedora and other open source communities.

Join us for pizza, drinks and networking from 6pm, then Kate's talk from 6.30pm (or join online for the talk only).
I remember a presentation that John Strand at Black Hills Information Security did that outlined a 5 year plan to get into cybersecurity. It changed my life! One of the things that stuck with me was his story about Henry Rollins and building your own community. That's why I started SOCpupIT (pronounced sock puppet) so I could find my community.
It's the 3rd weekend of our Cyversity weekend get together for folks who are busy during the work week or are having trouble making connections to folks also starting out in #cybersecurity. We're always looking to meet and help out folks new to cybersecurity so stop on by our Discord server! We meet 9:00am PST/PDT every Saturday!
Every week we try to look over an entry level job posting and workshop how we can tailor our resumes to match watch companies are looking for.
We also have a Tech Topic portion where we present anything that's interesting to us in cybersecurity. I've been doing a lot of Linux based stuff because that's my jam.
Finally, we have a Help Desk portion for for who are having any trouble setting things up in their #homelab, need advice on what to do to get started, next projects, and other things they need help with.
#ClimateDiary Keep on thinking of when Lauren in #ParableOfTheSower starts packing a backpack (with seeds etc), just in case they need to leave; and how she then tries to talk to her best friend about it, but this friend just can’t take it. Now in “unchartered territory” for #OceanTemperatures and the prospect of #ElNino kicking in already later this year, i do worry things might get pretty bad already this year; and have started to think (crazy i know!) about my own “backpack” packing 1/2
We often refer to Crystal as a language for humans and computers, here we have an amazing article by one of our community members giving us a rundown of Crystal language from a newbie’s perspective,
The article explains important aspects of Crystal and how to get started with contributing to the language. Thanks to @DiegoCrespo for creating such an informative guide for the beginners:)
Then I began tooting my #music and a ton of #puns#jokes, and #memes. And you all responded so genuinely, and with such positivity, that I very quickly was made to feel at home.
My deepest gratitude goes out to the #Mastodon community, a #community that has literally improved the quality of my time on this spinning rock as it hurtles through space, towards a future that seems more uncertain every day. It’s unlike any other “social media platform” here.
Today, I celebrate the arbitrary milestone of five thousand followers, and I just wanted to say thank you.
Thank you for the favourites, the boosts, the follows, and the comments.
Thank you for your conversations, discussions, and corrections.
Thank you for listening to my music and sharing your thoughts on it with me, and for following along on your chosen streaming service. This has been amazing.
But, above all, I’d like to thank you all for making Mastodon the friendly and welcoming place that it is. My experience here is one of wonderful acceptance, and it has been truly humbling. There is nowhere else quite like it.
We're seeking proposals from prospective speakers, covering a wide range of topics: community management, program management, contributor experience, governance, sustainability, succession planning, you name it!
Dear everybody on #Twitter looking at #Bluesky please please come over to the federated social web first, already proven to work for millions of people without millions of $$ in capital. I'll personally help you get set up please reach out.
Anyone want to set up a #basketball#Mastodon (or #Akkoma or ? if you'll do the tech!) with me while the #NBA playoffs are going on? How many people are still on Twitter mostly because a piece like that of their #online#community is missing here?
"It’s a re-calibration to a more human scale I desperately needed. My tweets were getting lost in all the noise for many years, but on Mastodon I’m finding connection again, folks are actually responding, conversations are happening, and there’s a growing sense of community."
I'm looking forward to the annual #conference of the #Homeschool Association of #California again! It's the only conference I make sure I attend every year. Mostly I go for
** #community **,
other #homeschoolers, other #kids who accept and care about each other across ages, watching kids enjoy each others' company and adults hanging out laughing, everyone #learning from each other!
