Hey, I'm a #designer & #developer from Germany. I like the open-source spirit and am dipping my toes into decentralisation. I've also always had a knack for #creativeWriting, so that's something I like doing in my time off. Nice to meet you! 😁

I had a feeling I used to be able to focus/hover an HTML <select> and either use my mouse scroll wheel or keyboard arrow keys to just go up and down the options.

Was that ever a thing? I can't seem to do it any more..

amxmln,
@amxmln@mastodon.design avatar

@sarajw that’s how it works on Linux / GTK if I’m not mistaken. 🤔 I definitely remember some accidental inputs because of that. Can’t say if that extended to the browser though. 😅

I hate it. I spent a few hours last weekend looking for suitable earbuds (not in-ear) but couldn't find anything.

But maybe the upcoming earbuds from Nothing will be a good fit.

amxmln,
@amxmln@mastodon.design avatar

@nharox I really enjoy my ear (stick) — but yeah, probably best to wait and see what they’ll release. 😊

Can’t believe it’s almost Monday again…and that we’re already at the middle of April? 😅

This year has flown past so far. 😳

amxmln,

@andycarolan we do! 😊 But if they move as quickly as the first three and a half, that’s going to feel like Christmas in two weeks from now. 😅

amxmln,

@vdvestelle it really does! And it just keeps accelerating. 😅

What's a good/cheap host with easy/automatic https cert setup for static sites? Netlify but without the surprise charges?

amxmln,
@amxmln@mastodon.design avatar

@heydon I really like @ubernauten – hosting is in Germany though without a CDN layer. Fair pricing, great customer support, very flexible.

@gabopsd yours also still getting hot for no reason? 🤔

amxmln,
@amxmln@mastodon.design avatar

@gabopsd oh no. 😅 All my phones have been roughly that size since 2018 for me, so I guess I’m used to it. But the thermal issues worry me, maybe I just got a bad one? 🤔

I have an element that I want to have a transition on, but only for the first 500ms after hovering on it. Same for when the mouse leaves the element, where I need a transition for the 500ms again.

Is the best way to do this with a mouseover & mouseout event listeners and a setTimeout, or is there something better?

I feel like there's a trick I'm missing to do this with CSS-only, but I can't figure it out 😅

amxmln,
@amxmln@mastodon.design avatar

@kevinpowell @kristengrote I worked on a similar issue with the terminal on my website. Instead of fiddling with timeouts and such, which proved unreliable, I ended up using an easing function that eases out with no ease in. It doesn’t completely get rid of the lag, but makes it much less noticeable. 😊

Honest question: what are the benefits for authors to post to Medium?

I use YT, so I know there are benefits to using 3rd party platforms to host content.

I don't post to Medium though, and as a consumer I don't see the benefits for the author, so curious what they are :)

amxmln,
@amxmln@mastodon.design avatar

@kevinpowell when I signed up for it way back when, I was intrigued by three things:

  • Clean, easy and minimal content creation + reading experience
  • The potential to perhaps easily monetise my content
  • And first and foremost, the greater reach an established network brings with it

None of them proved to be true, especially as time went on. 😅

amxmln,
@amxmln@mastodon.design avatar

@kevinpowell yeah, it’s definitely gotten worse. I think I only ever published two articles before I ended up adding a blog to my own website. 😅

Is that … a View Transition in Safari?

Why yes it is! Safari Technology Preview 192 has Same-Document View Transitions enabled, ready for testing.

Demo: https://view-transitions.netlify.app/stack-navigator/spa/

Recording of the linked to demo

amxmln,
@amxmln@mastodon.design avatar

@bramus does that mean we’ll also see an official way to turn off the built-in transition when trackpad-swiping for navigation? 🤔

amxmln,
@amxmln@mastodon.design avatar

@bramus seems to me like they’re kind of connected, though. ViewTransitions don’t make much sense if they break when using a trackpad gesture, right? 😅

Or are you referring to the MPA ViewTransitions feature? 🤔

amxmln,
@amxmln@mastodon.design avatar

@bramus yes, that I am aware of, thanks! Like you said, unfortunately it doesn’t work on Safari, which also is one or the only browser that has its own transition, which breaks custom ones. That’s why I was hoping with the introduction of this feature, they’d take a look at that. 😊

Replacing it without having to add your own gesture code would be awesome! Great to hear you’re looking into that! 😊

📝 New post: I noticed MSNBC is tacking on a 30s explainer video on how to install their native app at the end of each YouTube video and it stirred up some thoughts about native apps vs websites.

https://daverupert.com/2024/04/download-our-native-app/

amxmln,
@amxmln@mastodon.design avatar

@davatron5000 and that’s one of the reasons I love PWAs so much (and think Apple should finally allow for easier installation). 😊

Just click a link, use the app and if you like it, install it with one tap. 👌

amxmln, to webdev
@amxmln@mastodon.design avatar

Does anyone know of a self-hostable, lightweight service that I can send a message to and it will reply with a push notification after a given date and time? 🤔

Sadly, notifications cannot be scheduled on-device in PWAs, they have to be pushed to the service worker by a server. 😅

Curious to see if there’s something like that out there before I build my own. 😊

7 years after I saw this get demoed by @chriscoyier at #CSSDayConf, WebKit now added support to animate SVG path data from within CSS through the d property.

svg:hover path {
 d: path("M5,2 Q 8,5 5,8");
}

Good to see long-lasting bugs eventually get tackled :)

Bug: https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=272447

Demo: https://www.bram.us/2017/06/21/changing-svg-path-data-with-css/ (Chrome and Firefox, soon Safari too)

“AI” as currently hyped is giant billion dollar companies blatantly stealing content, disregarding licenses, deceiving about capabilities, and burning the planet in the process.

It is the largest theft of intellectual property in the history of humankind, and these companies are knowingly and willing ignoring the licenses, terms of service, and laws that us lowly individuals are beholden to.

Do I want to try and install Word 97 just to prove to myself there really was an HTML editor built into it?

I swear that's how I learned HTML. I think for my personal history I need to know. And take some decent screenshots...

@sarajw honestly that just fits the vibe of the video imo. 🤣 Reminds me of those really early YouTube tutorials with no voiceover. 😊
