Dear everybody on #Twitter looking at #Bluesky please please come over to the federated social web first, already proven to work for millions of people without millions of $$ in capital. I'll personally help you get set up please reach out.
Whatever theoretical future potential for Bluesky's specification, everybody posting about it and even pining for it is missing the continued mass migration to the ActivityPub-based #fediverse which has, now, the community and flexibility we need!
I really hate the idea that it's "hard" to pick a server when we live in a world that we got 7+ different streaming services for content, 100+ places for news
That's fair. I'd be interested in having more 'creatives' here but that's a thing about money there.
I feel like QTs, as a term, were one of the top 3 worse ones to come from twitter b /c it's "their" definition of a link in a post with a preview. That's doable and has been done.
@jalcine@mlncn I mostly agree with you but the signup UX has been the #1 outside complaint about this place and we can't be stubborn about people's pain points if we want to grow.
Even if we disagree, we still gotta address this stuff because we're not going to change people's minds by arguing. We've tried that
@ehashman that I do agree with (and actually this has slightly led to a reassessment with the IndieWeb b/c this problem is there too and the kind of stuff/people I work with wouldn't be able to do this) @mlncn
Anyone want to set up a #basketball#Mastodon (or #Akkoma or ? if you'll do the tech!) with me while the #NBA playoffs are going on? How many people are still on Twitter mostly because a piece like that of their #online#community is missing here?
Yes a server dedicated to the NBA! And WNBA! (And men's and women's college and #EuroBasket or whatever.)
Simply by saying we have a server for this and inviting people for this, the community around this will likely become big enough to sustain itself in the fediverse. People who come to the server can use it as their main account to do whatever with, same as most of us who joined a more-or-less community-specific server did.
@mlncn@Jonathanglick@misc Interesting. I've been agitating specifically for the WNBA org to create their own and promote it to their audience so they have a more welcoming place without all the misogynistic replies. Your idea could be a good demonstration to these organizations to make the investment.
As a user of the server you're proposing here, could I follow it from this account or would I need a separate account? Asking bc I don't like the idea of needing a specific account for each of the topics I like to post about here. Though I def understand the problems it would solve as well.
@Defiance@Jonathanglick@misc i'm not envisioning anything special technically, although groups and such are interesting.
You would follow individual people on "the basketball server" same as you can follow me at social.coop and i can follow you at SFBA.social, but if you want to say something about #cooperatives you use that hashtag and if i want to follow what's going on in San Francisco i try #SanFrancisco and wow you people are active over there.
On "the basketball server" any given member might be talking about anything, we would expect the home timeline to be a bit more basketball-heavy than the average, but yeah most of us post about whatever wherever we are, so when we want to talk to reach people talking about the women's US & Canada professional basketball preseason starting in May we'd use #WNBA
@mlncn@Jonathanglick@misc Hashtags are how I do this now, figuring anyone following me for my punk and new wave music posts MIGHT not want to see all my commentary during games. So I use mostly my team tag of #DubNation, but also #nba and #basketball
I'll support anything that gets a measurable group of people here on Mastodon to talk about #WNBA starting next month.
OK we're doing this. bball.city domain netted and a couple non-fediverse basketball friends are in.
Proposal for software other than Mastodon?
I commit to funding a https://toot.io/mastodon_hosting.html level and the non-technical server admin stuff beyond that, helping set up coop structure and an open collective, recruiting moderators committed to anti-racism, pro-LGBTQ etc (DM me your email!)
@Jonathanglick in part, yeah, so probably someone who has actually been using #NBA to talk games like @ItzyG has would be better as main initial moderators / promoters, modeling the the fediverse way would be better— but one of the things i'd be modeling is accounts on different servers for different interests. (Despite a small poll resulting in half my responding followers telling me "To keep it together" 😂 )
