Can anyone suggest a candidate other than Biden or Trump that look fairly moderate and a good choice? I have ruled out all third-party, all alternative democrats, and of course Trump... This leaves me thinking maybe one of the republican candidates are worth voting for but so far every one of those I checked out are pretty horrific too...

Is there even one candidate that is remotely a reasonable and moderate choice?

I know that here on Mastodon there are plenty of lefties, socialists, anarchists, etc., and their viewpoints are certainly worthy of consideration and discussion.

But I hope everyone keeps in mind that a number of these people are not who they seem to be.

My rule of thumb is that, if they just spew anti-Biden mumbo-jumbo, without any logic or intelligent thought, they are probably working to get trump elected, and are NOT on the left.

My top 3 criteria for picking who I vote for this year will be:

  1. Is not Biden
  2. Is not Trump
  3. Of whoever is left, the most honest, compassionate, and least racist/sexist choice.

Amazing story. Have you followed it?

Texas A&M announces a new journalism dean. She's black and she's qualified— and an alum of the school! Ex-New York Times too.

They announce her appointment in a splashy event.

Dark forces of reaction mobilize.

The offer is watered down to one year, with no tenure. She says no way, and withdraws. National news is made. It's negative. And today, the president of A&M resigns!

I sometimes forget that the far right is an anti enlightenment movement.

Perhaps it's my decades of being submerged in the ivory tower of the university or maybe it's just a love of logic and enlightenment principals. I don't know.

But I'm realizing what I find persuasive--evidence that's based on reason--not only fails to persuade the anti-enlightenment crowd, but actually incenses them. They hate reason the way vampires hate sunlight.

A new blog post is out from @ElectionGraphs. That's @abulsme's site where he builds predictive models based on current polls.

Highlights:

"If a Biden vs Trump election was held today (it won't be), it would be fundamentally too close to call."

"[polls' trends] have at least leveled off, and may have started moving in Trump's direction again."

Interesting fact of the day: Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation only freed the southern slaves and kept the north slaves legal and enslaved. It was a sort "screw you to the south" more so than to abolish slavery.

Lincoln only supported and pushed through the 13th amendment once slavery was voluntarily abolished at the state level first.

"Describing [RFK's] views as ‘controversial,’ I think, is dishonest. They’re not controversial. They’re false. He’s not spreading controversial views, he’s spreading lies. And so the framing matters enormously, and that’s something that I foresee being a huge, huge issue in the 2024 campaign."

Agreed!

"Not the odds, but the stakes."

That's my shortand for the organizing principle we most need from journalists covering the 2024 election. Not who has what chances of winning, but the consequences for our democracy. Not the odds, but the stakes.

Today the New York Times published an example of stakes reporting:

"Trump and his allies are planning a sweeping expansion of presidential power over the machinery of government...."

Wow, democrats are really showing their colors today with this whole "boycott the CNN" thing... Unless I missed soemthing he is a presidential candidate, and one who so far hasnt been found guilty of anything that would disqualify him... and a popular one.

Yes he is a piece of shit, and yes he has no business being in politics... But its not CNNs job to make those decisions. Their job is to let the candidates say their piece and let the public decide from there (or the courts if there are legal questions).

As much as I hate Trump... I lost so much respect for the democrats today. Supporting censorship, specifically doing so with the intent of winning an election in their favor, is a new low... dont be that party...

Serious question, please boost for reach.

I’m a 50+ white male.

How many old white guys out there would be willing join a 501(c)(3) whose mission is to oppose old white guys in positions of power? How many people would be willing to provide financial support for the same?

Nothing like this currently exists in the U.S. and I think it could be a damn effective form of protest. Personally, I’m sick and tired of seeing old fucking white guys in power everywhere I turn. Am I an aberration?

Oh, and despite thinking of myself as a bit of wordsmith, I’m admittedly terrible at acronym generation. What’s a good name for an organization pursuing said mission?

Joe Biden could still turn this around and not lose to Trump by defunding Israel’s genocide of the Palestinian people. If he doesn’t, there will be only person to blame for Joe Biden losing to Trump in six months and that’s Joe “I am a Zionist” Biden.

Not knowing US constitutional law, it seems to me the SCOTUS decision might mean that the Dems missed an opportunity when they had the house

That it’s a federal matter seems legally predictable/natural to me, and that it then falls to congress to enforce then also seems natural.

What am I missing on that?

Otherwise, what would the Dems have had to lose by passing an act when they had the house? The 14th was right there.
