What I've learned about #Fediverse (#Mastodon#Calckey etc) condensed to help others.
I realise #Fediverse is an evolving co-operating culture with common protocol linking many things. No platform is trying to lock up all my attention in their walled garden.
I can have several accounts, try & use several platforms, keep my circles across all & I'm free to move around. Exporting and importing followers, migrating, these are all #Fediverse core principles. Freely social, not captive eyeballs.
On phone tablet desktop, I can have apps and/or I can open simple browser windows +just type an instance's address. There are many ways to login & communicate across the #Fediverse.
This idea is a revolution in itself. How much effort did I lose on doomed corporation farms that were jealously trying to carve out separately, wall away and own their userbase. Myspace, Google+, Facebook, Twitter.

If there are subjects I don't want to deal with I can set filter words in my profile settings which will stop certain topics from showing up in my feeds.
#Fediverse & it's different platforms+software have masses of clever tools, & different ways to access. You communicate with people all over the Fediverse, across different platforms.
So much more to explore, new projects, new apps:
#PixelFed like Instagram but not constantly trying to sell you stuff #PeerTube like Youtube but not ads based #Friendica like Facebook but not harvesting your data or radicalising your relatives #Mastodon millions use it as Twitter without all the Nazis #Calckey a really smooth & fun new Twitter replacement with loads more features than Twitter
& many more to discover. They all communicate together, you can use any or all, keep your people, your following circles across all of them.

(5/7) In the age of #socialmedia and constant information, it's important to be aware of how media can change our perception of #reality. We need authenticity and truth in the stories we're told, but who can we trust to interpret the #truth? Whistleblowers like Edward Snowden and Julian Assange have dealt with unpleasant truths and found a way to deal with liars in power, but at what cost?
Our world has changed because of "social media" but is it for the better? Sometimes I don't know.
From Jesse Michaels: "i find social media dumb and boring and I think it ruined the entire world..... We are hyper- socialized. That destroys intimacy. Everybody thinks everything is everybody's business. like the whole world is a small town now, with everybody up each other's asses..."
A little snapshot of the state of discourse on #Twitter:

If you work for an organisation doing anything important and serious like #science or #journalism, surely now is the time to convince your colleagues that you need your own properly moderated #Fediverse instance?
The American Psychological Association has 10 recommendations on how teens can use social media safely, with specific training and regular monitoring to avoid associated negative behaviours.
OK I need someone younger and cooler than me to explain Instagram. When should I post a story instead of a post? What are the unspoken rules that will make me look out of place? Am I really not supposed to use emojis anymore?!
No one culture, or country, is superior to another. You can not force your sensibilities, or culture, on other people—especially not online and while you are in their country.
