Oh cool, DuckDuckGo now accepts pay-for-placement and doesn't review ads manually and so, now scam websites are in first position.

Cool cool cool.

edit: this is with uBlock Origin enabled, stop @-ing me

youronlyone,

@fasterthanlime And don't forget, their results is very small because they are using Bing.

There is a known bug in Bing results, and has been going on for 2–3 years now. Even legitimate and very old domains are affected, either pages are disappearing or the entire domain.

YET, Bing Webmaster tools doesn't show any errors or violations, to the contrary, Bing Webmaster claims the sites were successfully indexed. (Bing engineers will reply to your report but will never follow up again.)

Any site using Bing as their base, or only source, are useless. #DuckDuckGo is one such.

It's better to use #StartPage @StartpageSearch or any non-Bing search engines like #SearX / #SearXNG.

It's amazing that DDG is also turning a deaf ear about this issue.

This may be obvious, but I recently started routinely adding "-youtube" to google searches. This eliminates most pages with links to garbage YouTube-monetized videos that try to attract people looking for basic instructions on how to do simple things. Greatly improves the quality of search results.

AlexanderMars,

@mattblaze check out a #SearxNG instance when you get a chance. If you like it you can even host your own private instance.

I don't know who needs to hear this (nobody in the fediverse thank God), but speaking up for Palestinians doesn't excuse deplorable conduct. Atrocity deniers, xenophobes and other terrible people, a Palestinian flag won't cover up your shame.

Indonesia has seen numerous mass rallies condemning Israel and calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. But the spike in pro Gaza sentiments in Indonesia, have coincided with rampant and violent anti Rohingya xenophobia in the country.

@ZekuZelalem As an AJE contributor, you might be able to convince the journalist to do a more in-depth investigation and contact local HR NGOS. Research article 2015 (non-OA) [1] found with #SearXNG [2]. She could contact Acehnese NGOS directly [3][4], of which there ~60 recognised ones [5]. Probably they have FB, birdsite contacts.

Given the whole current situation with Kagi and Brave and my disappointment at the CEO's "keep politics out of tech" tech bro BS, I fear I might have to switch search engines again.

What I want is basically Google's index without its tracking, and being able to completely remove whole domains from the results (killer feature of Kagi for me). Happy to pay.

I've tried DDG in the past and was not happy with the quality. Maybe searxng? But no filtering there.

Ideas?

foosel,
@foosel@chaos.social avatar

The experience with my self-hosted #SearXNG meta search engine is so far not perfect, but good enough.

I've just cancelled my #Kagi Pro subscription and will delete the account once that runs out on Sunday.

I wanted to love Kagi, loved its (stated) goals, but if the project leader goes all "keep politics out of tech" as reaction to criticism about collaborating with Brave, then it's apparently just one more tech-bro project out there, and I don't need to support that with my money.

foosel,
@foosel@chaos.social avatar

To be able to properly evaluate #SearXNG as an alternative to #Kagi, I've just set up an instance in my homelab.

Next Kagi payment cycle is coming up next week, until then I'll hopefully know if this works or not. If anything can test how well a search engine works for me, it's a work week.

Maybe try the searxng matrix support chat, I think there might be a few developers around that could point you in right direction:

matrix.to/#/#searxng:matrix.org

They also have a Mirc support channel is that is more your cup of tea.

I finally decided to try switching away from Google as my default search engine! I'm trying out the SearXNG instance Fuzzy Searx run by the admin of CyberFurz, @hack13

odoben,

@hack13 @gray @Tricad
Update: I've now had #SearXNG as my default search engine for a little over a week. I still find myself falling back to Google for about 50% of my searches, for example when looking for Wikipedia articles, but for that I should probably use the !wiki operator anyway. I haven't looked into the yet and haven't done any tweaking in the settings. I expect making use of all that will improve the experience greatly :blobfox:

What’s everyone’s favorite self-hosted metasearch engine? I was using #SearX, but it’s no longer maintained. Thinking of moving over to #SearXNG? Any reason not to? Not sure why NG split off from SearX other than internal disputes (I think).

running a #SearXNG docker takes so much ram!
like around 600MB! and out of my 2gb ram #RaspberryPi that's a ton.

I also run a Nextcloud docker and that's around 260MB.

(both when idle).

might have to find an alternative.
Tho at this point, coming from my home WiFi, it doesn't give all that much more privacy since I keep the same IP address.
