lemonuri,

Fun fact: as my philosophy prof never failed to point out platonic friendship in the original Greek sense did not exclude sexual relations and related to a relationship between mentor and student, which meant they were homosexual in nature. Cmp.: psychologytoday.com/…/the-true-meaning-of-platoni…

lemonuri,

You don’t really need the sever at all if you have another phone in your family that can send a text message. Now that I think of it it might not be a bad idea to set up a sever as backup. But the public sever from the developer should be fairly safe to use as well…

lemonuri,

I’ve been using xmpp for several years now. Even running my own server for family and friends. It’s a great feeling to be fully independent imho.

lemonuri,

I’ve used a Bluetooth heart monitor worn around the chest (was around 20 $ ten years ago) to measure the heart rate before. It works well with open tracks and should be more reliable compared to a device worn around the wrist. I am not sure the gps tracker on a watch works be better than the one on your phone anyways. It might be a problem with your phone killing background apps like opentracks. Check dontkillmyapp.com before pulling the plug on a new device.

lemonuri,

How about we set a no tracking flag in our browsers for example and companies actually respect the choice? One can only dream…

lemonuri,

Another option would be to install an im server that is low on resources and not eating your sdcard. I think xmpp would work a lot better on a pi. Prosody, ejabberd or snikket should work nicely.

lemonuri,

We managed to kill off a third of the entire bug population during the last 25 years or so.

lemonuri,

Are you implying the tabs backups are not written into the profile folder? Because think 10 - 20 GB a day is still something to be convened about. servethehome.com/firefox-is-eating-your-ssd-here-…

I have used Firefox in ram for a couple of months now without problems and am pretty happy with it.

xmpp android app with omemo and unified push notifications support

Anyone aware of a conversations fork with support for unified push notifications? Or a similar xmpp android app with omemo (just the same as conversations’ support) and unified push notifications support, available through the official f-droid repor or a f-droid repo if not available from the official ones?...

lemonuri, (edited )

Conversions on android keeps a websocket connection open to receive messages. It’s supposed to generate very little overhead in battery consumption. The unified push app on android uses the same technique to provide other apps with pushes. So you could set conversations to be the push provider on your phone and would not need the unified push app any more. This way you would be using the same amount of battery as before.

The conversations xmpp support channel is very helpful if you have further questions: someone there will also very likely know if any apps with unified push support exist.

lemonuri,

They technically already get 300 Dollars a year out of you without you ever subscribing so who’s laughing now?

Recommend me a wireless earphones/headset with good audio...that is PINK in color

So…trying to accommodate to gf’s demands, here’s a curve ball…which audio headset/earphones would you recommend that, while keeping good audio, sells also in PINK COLOR? Your average Sony XM, Sennheiser Momentum, Airpods etc…they all lack pink. Suggestions?

lemonuri,

They look great! Is there a already an Autoeq profile that headset?

Inspiron One 2305 has corrupted graphics after coming out of suspend (lemmy.world)

This Inspiron One 2305 has corrupted graphics after coming out of suspend, this has happened with Gnome (Wayland), i3, less commonly Swaywm, almost everything I have suspended it with, and makes the computer unusable outside of a TTY. I am considering trying KDE next. What can be the issue here? I am currently using EndeavorOS.

lemonuri,

Ctrl +alt + F1 fixes errors for me after waking up the machine. Might be worth a try.

lemonuri,

I think it’s best to only buy routers supporting openwrt in the first place and switch firmware to openwrt asap. Openwrt or Opnsense or anything open source and well maintained will guarantee security updates years and years beyond the original manufactures firmware.

lemonuri,

No, but openwrt seems to be available for some of their models if that is your question.

Update: I made a spreadsheet that ranks messaging apps for privacy (privacyspreadsheet.com)

I’ve been working hard on the privacy spreadsheet, which has been in development for over 150 hours now. Its been updated, and now includes more messaging apps and more data, with a better format. I’m still working on the sidebar issue, if anyone knows how to fix it, here’s the GitHub repo:...

lemonuri,

I first heard about this in a Gaiman story called ‘A Parliament of Rooks’.

lemonuri,

Hitting a round birthday gets harder every time it happens in my opinion. On the other hand I didn’t mind hitting 42 too much. After all, it’s the answer to life, the universe and everything. That should be something to look forward to at 40!

lemonuri,

Sounds kind of cool. Does is support Rockbox, yet?

lemonuri,

I’d heard the sandwich story before, but had no clew about some of the others!

If you do not need the nfc cabability of your cards, just his them in front of a bright lamp, see where the cables run and cut the card with a scissor. Apply transparent tape over the cut and you have a privacy respecting card again. It’s what I always do as my bank offers no service to disable nfc.

There is no need fire up a dedicated machine to do this. Use your router/ap running openwrt and connect a hdd via usb. The machine needs at least 128 Mb RAM (256 mb would be better). Install the transmission package, set it up, add a gig of swap space on the hdd and you are good to go. The AP runs 24/7 anyways so there will be very few extra power consumption. Vpns often don’t allow port forwarding (mullvad has stopped support recently if I remember correctly). You can just be a passive node and not often ports, that should work good enough. Consider seeding parts of sci-hub. it’s a project worth supporting imho.

You can just download once of the parts below with less than 12 seeds and set it to host without ratio:

lemonuri,

I am using a Fujitsu mini office Pc at the moment. I5 3470T I think. Idles around 8 Watt. I think it’s a gen 4 I5. This one plenty powerful. An I 3 might be enough as well. There are other vendors like hp and Lenovo as well. They are all quiet and easily upgradable. Fujitsu provides a whitepaper for any of those sff machines, where real life power consumption is listed in detail. The other vendors will be pretty close in power consumption I think as the cpu is the most demanding part in these machines. The newer cpus 6 and newer generations seem to draw even less power, 4-6 watt at idle, which might be worth the higher used prices of these machines in the long run.

Thin clients might also be a viable option if you find one cheap. www.parkytowers.me.uk/thin/

has a lot of thin clients and their respective power consumption listed.
