Hey, I want to talk about something. Start a conversation on the dev community. Let’s throw it to the #php folks

Describing #ADHD as a “superpower” is a mistake. It’s one I’ve made in public talks in the past.

#ADHD, particularly in adults and girls, is:

  • wildly misunderstood
  • incorrectly named
  • incorrectly described in the DSM
  • manifests as structural and functional differences in multiple brain regions
  • NOT correlated to typical measures of intelligence
  • INVOLUNTARY

I'm really fed up of seeing articles like:

• PHP is dead
• Does PHP have a future?
• 10 reasons not to use PHP
• Here's a hundred languages to use instead of PHP

#php is a fantastic, highly capable #programming language that's constantly evolving. I suspect the authors of such articles may have used PHP once in 1995 for a "Hello world".

If you can't cope without using a million Java frameworks or whatever else is flavour of the month then you might want to reassess your own #coding skills. 😠

That one time I went to a security conference on the other side of the world and defended PHP... 🤓😎
The best bit was I had pro pentesters come up to me at the end and tell me they hate trying to test modern PHP sites! They are too hard to break!😈

Supply chain attacks are a plague in the ecosystem. is less affected, but we can do even better! I just proposed a patch to to detect when your dependencies introduce new dependencies from sources you don't trust.

We will use this feature to improve the security of @symfony and @ApiPlatform. It should also be possible to port this idea to @npmjs and other package managers 🤝

What are the weirdest things you did with #php ?

Wrote an IRC bot (now defunct) that remains one of my longest-lived projects: https://github.com/phergie/phergie-irc-bot-react

Did enough web scraping to write a book on the subject: https://www.phparch.com/books/web-scraping-with-php-2nd-edition/

Hi fediverse. My name is Nishiki and I’m a web dev with 15+ years of experience. I’m making myself available as a mentor for one or two motivated individuals looking to land their first junior engineering position. I’m happy to be able to say over the past few years, I’ve mentored 4 wonderful people who have all managed to land their first tech jobs.

Please email me at hello@nshki.com if interested. A boost for reach is much appreciated!

Are you a developer or a WordPress/Laravel/Symfony/Drupal developer?

Understanding the underlying language will make you more effective and considerably more flexible/employable.

Understanding the language helps you read the framework code and make sense of complex things. It lets you adopt new tech. And it empowers you to switch from one project to another without fear.

Be a language developer.

As fixes for the current #glibc and #php #vulnerability are not reliably available yet, keep in mind that a workaround exists for those of you who don’t need support for the ISO-2022-CN-EXT character set: https://rockylinux.org/news/glibc-vulnerability-april-2024/

This should be quite straightforward to apply on most machines – except those running #NixOS. If you do use NixOS, my solution might help you bridge the gap until the proper fix is upstream: https://git.brokentech.cloud/mart-w/nixos-workaround-cve-2024-2961

Thanks @hexa for pointing me in the right direction!

I learned about an idea that lives in our community to start a foundation to help the community.
Yes I know we have the @thephpf, that's mainly focused on core development of php. #php is much larger than just the language, we have user groups, conferences, meetups, speakers, opensource projects and their maintainers.
Most of them operate for free, but they have expenses. speakers at php conferences do not get paid, part of their expenses are covered but not all.

Let's talk!
