Today was a great day! It’s not every day you run into a famous mosaic such as this beauty. This is the ‘know yourself’ mosaic which is on display at the Baths of Diocletian. Such a happy find ☺️

For #TravelThursday here's the Love Park in Miraflores, Lima, Peru. Miraflores has a number of interesting parks but this one has one of the best views out to sea from the high cliffs of the city. There's a sculpture in the park called The Kiss that's popular for wedding photos and on Valentine's Day, and it, like some mosaics here, have Paracas and Ica tribal influences.
#Dionysos is returning from #India in this mosaic from #Tunesia. His chariot is pulled by #tigers and winged Nike (victory) is riding with the victorious demigod. A riotous procession of bacchants surrounds the chariot.
This is the first piece I created in my Labor Of Love Series Circa 2005. I hand painted each shape and then used a black paint pen to outline each piece. Very time consuming! But these paintings live on. I still love to use them to create new art!

This Roman Villa was buried in a mudslide, preserving much of the building's content and mosaics. Each room contained floor mosiacs appropriate to the room's function.

Dear Editor,
We have four alternatives to Highway 4. Three roads are controlled by Mosaic Forest Company and one railway escaped the fire and floods but not decades of Government neglect. It is time for Government’s stubborn, ideological resistance to expanding our publicly owned transportation networks to end.
The Ministry has demonstrated its preference for the “Valley Link” between Cowichan, Alberni, and Comox, including servicing Nitinat, Anacla, and Bamfield, with its upgrades to the Bamfield road, so finish the job: Take over the forestry roads and extend Highway 18. While you’re at it, compensate and work with First Nations to rebuild the railway and provide resilience and new options for all residents and businesses.
Billions of dollars in economic activity is being wasted by road closures because Government has allowed our transportation networks to deteriorate and become reliant on single points of failure.
"And Dardanos' child, #Ganymedes, prince of Phrygia, the dear delight of #Zeus' bed, dipped deep the bowl of gold [at the wedding of Peleus and Thetis], filling the cups for wine-offerings." #Euripides, Iphigenia at Aulis
"There is some pleasure in loving a youth, since once in fact even the son of Kronos [#Zeus], king of the immortals, fell in love with #Ganymedes, seized him, carried him off to Olympos, and made him divine, keeping the lovely bloom of youth."
"30 years ago this week…something called the World Wide Web launched into the public domain…#CERN owned Berners-Lee's invention and…had the option to license [it] out…for profit. But Berners-Lee believed that keeping the web as open as possible would help it grow…[He] eventually convinced CERN to release the World Wide Web into the #PublicDomain without any #patents or fees."
@petersuber I vividly remember the early days of the web when it was unclear whether it would matter to average people compared to walled-garden services like #AOL (then #AmericaOnline), #Prodigy, or #CompuServe.
IMHO the web’s early rise depended on two other factors:
• Graphical #browsers like #NCSA#Mosaic on mainstream computer operating systems (1993)
• Decommissioning of the US government-funded #NSFNET backbone, effectively ending restrictions on commercial Internet traffic (1995)
I don't think people are realising the danger the Fediverse is in.
The only thing stopping corporations and VCs taking over this place is that the Fediverse is spread out on many different servers, which makes it very difficult to purchase.
If most of the Fediverse ends up on mastodon.social, which is now a strong possibility, there will be nothing to stop most of it being sold to Musk or Zuckerberg or whoever.
The bigger mastodon.social becomes, the more likely a buyout is to happen.
