An artist-run, anti-AI social platform called Cara has grown from 40,000 to 650,000 users in just a week, as artists leave Instagram in their thousands to protest against Meta’s AI policies.
Artists aren’t happy that the social media giant is using public posts on its platforms to train its generative AI systems, with no way to opt out for U.S. users. Meta’s loss is Cara’s gain, but such a jump in users hasn’t come without its challenges. @TechCrunch has more.
A social app for creatives, Cara grew from 40k to 650k users in a week because artists are fed up with Meta’s AI policies
"On Wednesday, Zhang opened her email to find a horrible shock: her bill for using Vercel, a web hosting company, would cost $96,280 for the last week."
Every so often I’ll log in to my #Instagram account via the web browser because someone linked me to a Reel or told me they posted something to their story that I ‘must see’.
But today I downloaded all my data from #Meta and deleted the account. :pepe_cool:
Not sure what to do with my photographs. I used to rely on #flickr quite a lot, but it's been the same since 2000, and far from being the greatest solution.
I won't join #meta#instagram, been off from Facebook for 10 years, so I won't go back in this environment.
What's left? #500px maybe? Or #pixelfed could be a viable alternative today? Or maybe even turn my personal #blog in a platform where I can also share photos? 🤨 🤔
Zgodnie z tekstem informacyjnym wyświetlanym w aplikacji Instagram, te nowe przerwy reklamowe będą wyświetlać licznik czasu, który uniemożliwi użytkownikom przeglądanie większej ilości treści w aplikacji, do momentu obejrzenia reklamy."
Kleiner Reminder!
“Providing this data as input for Lavender undermines their claim that #WhatsApp is a private messaging app,” he wrote. “It is beyond obscene and makes #Meta complicit in Israel’s killings of ‘pre-crime’ targets and their families, in violation of international humanitarian law and Meta’s publicly stated commitment to human rights.
Ok, so I got the Facebook email today about the sneaky change in their TOS to steal more user data. This time for "AI".
That's it. I deleted my account. I wasn't using it anyway, but I kept it to keep Messenger working. I created a new Messenger account instead for the handful of cases where I still need it.
I had not yet accepted the changed TOS from last year, and had to "consent" to those outrageous terms too just to get to the delete button. Clearly illegal.
A beautiful #email informing that they will update their privacy #policy for the 100th time?
Thank you #Meta for your amazing #Ai and for completely ignoring peoples #privacy over and over again 😂
Please please go ahead use all our #data as you want:
"...on the legal basis called legitimate interests for using your information to develop and improve AI at Meta."
