DO NOT BUY HP PRINTERS!

I don't believe I've ever seen a more from a .

If you buy an and sign up for the optional HP Plus , you'll get a that will FORCE you to only new HP cartridges — for the life of your printer. And once that firmware update happens, there is no way to undo it.

DO NOT BUY HP PRINTERS!

https://www.theverge.com/2023/5/25/23736811/hp-plus-printer-ink-drm-firmware-update-cant-cancel
HP has found an exciting new way to your printer

screenshot from the article "Here are a few choice quotes from the terms and conditions for HP’s ink service that I think you’ll appreciate (bolding mine): "You expressly allow HP to remotely change, patch, update or otherwise modify Your printer’s software, firmware or programming remotely, without notice to You, in order to provide the Service to You or to comply with applicable laws "Remote monitoring may include provision to HP of one or more of: page counts, types of documents printed (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, pdf, jpeg, etc.), types of devices that initiated print jobs, printer serial number, cartridge information (e.g. HP original cartridge status, and whether the cartridge was new or used at the time of its last insertion into the printer), and other similar types of metrics related to your Service as may be added by HP from time to time "You agree to maintain connectivity of Your Printer to the Internet and to not remove or disable any remote monitoring software or functionality on Your Printer."
screenshot from the article "If Your printer is not connected to the Internet, then the Subscription Cartridges (as defined in section d. below) will be disabled, and You will not be able to use them to print; however, You will continue to be charged for the Service as described in Section 7 (“Paying for Your Service”). In order to reactivate disabled cartridges, You will need to reconnect Your printer to the Internet and keep it connected "When Your Service is cancelled for any reason, HP will remotely disable the Subscription Cartridges and You will no longer be able to print with the Subscription Cartridges. In such a case, you will need to purchase a regular HP cartridge compatible with your printer, in order to continue printing "HP may increase or otherwise change the Service Plan Fee and Overage Fee, and add additional fees, for any Service Plan, or otherwise change or add Service Plans at any time in HP’s sole discretion with prior notice to You."

Dear Fedi hivemind:

I am trying to organise a group of people working in academia (any career level, academic careers or technical) any that are working on #openhardware and affiliated with #uk institutions. If you are one, or if you know one, could you send me a message (or ask them to send me a message?)

The reason for the group is finding ways to work together and advocate for #openscience #hardware!

Please boost for reach?!

Thanks!

Hello,

Electro-engineers of fedi, what #FOSS software can you recommend for developing #hardware?

Mainly looking for circuit design, but interested in anything.

I don't have fancy needs. I don't need circuit simulation. I DO need a proper component catalog and to be able to wire up two things directly without the thing bitching about overlaps or whatever.

Something forcing me to figure out the geometry of all my connections when defining what is connected to what is worse than useless for me.

Magnetic #nerdy #mask charms!!! I designed a few of these (hex, Phillips, flathead) for upcoming #hardware events. They use a 6mm Neodymium magnet on the charm and a bigger one on the inside - all carefully oriented the same way. I'd like to send some of these out and maybe turn them into a real metal product. What do you think? ⚡️

Either way, I'll be sharing the STL files soon (for free) on @cults3d ! See all of my designs so far:
https://cults3d.com/en/users/alexglow

#Covid19 #MaskFashion 🤘🤘

All three versions, test-printed in .3mm low res, mounted on a mask: flathead, Phillips, hex nut. The flathead has some experimental Rub'n'Buff on one side.
Two of the "hex nuts", printed in black PLA, on her palm. One is upside-down, showing the 6mm magnet glued in place.
Alex holds a small bottle of Gorilla Glue and some Antique Silver Rub'n'Buff, used to complete the project.

AMD Announces $230 Ryzen 5 5600X3D CPU - AM4's Last Stand (www.youtube.com)

AMD is announcing the Ryzen 5 5600X3D -- except the launch is being handled entirely by Microcenter, including distribution of news, press releases, review samples, and handling of the product. The R5 5600X3D is a peculiar launch: It will be exclusive to Microcenter and, from what the retailer told us, it will be in-store only....

The Quazar Surround soundcard was my first hardware release for the SAM Coupe back in 1995, giving the SAM multichannel digital sound with surround outputs. Crazy for an #8bit machine!

The new Anniversary Edition is approaching release, with units due to ship out by the end of the month to fulfill preorders.

you have an interesting or ?

please dont ask me to sign up to your or or such.
i won't.
i shouldn't have to.
i don't have time to hang around one channel per piece of tech in my household.

please write good . publish it on a static website. ask for help if you need help.
there is a reason good technology comes with good docs, not discord channels.

To all you #hardware and #pcb beings on Fedi: Is there something like the DB9-USB-M from FTDI that's:
a) Cheaper (the DB9-USB-M is like 20$ on Mouser/Digikey/Farnell)
b) Doesn't use Mini-USB like something from the mid 2000s?

I've looked around a bit but haven't had any luck so far, as searching for that kind of USB serial converter isn't trivial as all the terms I came up with are overloaded with other stuff.

Bisherige Alternativen funktionieren nur so semi. 🤷‍♀️
Die bei Ebay hab ich gespeichert!
Aber vielleicht hat ja jemand von euch so eine, die nicht mehr gebraucht wird...?

people of Mastodon, you're my only hope.

I have a Dell laptop, running Ubuntu 22.04, with the following buttons around the trackpad. The trackpad works, and the three above it work (left, middle and right click as you'd expect).

I want the ones BELOW the trackpad (4 and 5) to be left and right click. Currently for some reason the left one is mapped to middle-click. How can I remap it? The other one does nothing at all.

xinput doesn't even know those buttons exists, and tells me I'm running xinput against an Xwayland server.

Things I've already tried:

• Gnome-Tweaks
• Key-Remapper

Can anyone have any idea about what this #mysterious #IBM #hardware can be ? I can't remember precisely how I got it, I THINK it was from a dumpster or found in a pile of some "electronic garbage". I have absolutely NO IDEA what this can be , I have a SUSPECT but I could be totally wrong, I THINK they MAY be part of an IBM 5100 but I can't be sure, if anyone knows what they could be I'd be interested to know !

Another mysterious piece from some IBM computer, no idea what it is.
