In Vietnam, farmers reduce methane emissions by changing how they grow rice

> Using less water and using a drone to fertilize are new techniques that Van is trying and #Vietnam hopes will help solve a paradox at the heart of growing #rice: The finicky crop isn’t just vulnerable to climate change but also contributes uniquely to it.

Most UK dairy farms ignoring pollution rules as manure spews into rivers

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/apr/19/most-uk-dairy-farms-ignoring-pollution-rules-as-manure-spews-into-rivers

80% of Welsh dairy farms inspected, 69% of English ones, 60% in Scotland and 50% in Northern Ireland breaching regulations.

Guardians of the countryside? No care for the weak standards, no enforcement, pressure on farmers to cut the cost of dairy products to unsustainable levels by supermarkets… It all adds up.

It would seem for all their claims about being stewards of the land & working with the environment, a significant proportion of framers are contributing to the pollution of our rivers....

I have some sympathy with milk farmers who have been struggling against a market rigged by the supermarkets, but equally this will win them few friends... and nor should it; this really is sh*tting on your own doorstep (figuratively & literally!)

This video by the channel No-Till Growers presents a simple composting system that uses chickens.

It is an interesting system that explores how to use on-farm inputs only.

A few remarks on this video.

The title and the guy telling the story pretend it's all just farm in & outputs, but quite at the start he mentions that he starts with food scraps from local restaurants... So, that's external input in my book.

The other external input is all the machinery and the fossil fuels that are used.

To be more resilient in an uncertain/collapsing future scenario these are not the type of solutions that can be sustained.

I'm all in favor of composting and producing food (yourself) and as locally as possible, but please don't lie to yourself about the degree of 'sustainability' when you are working like this, even if it involves composting stuff yourself.

Reconnecting with Nature: How Permaculture Helps Earth to Thrive 🌍

In today’s fast-paced world, where concrete jungles dominate landscapes and industrial agriculture strains ecosystems, the concept of permaculture stands as a beacon of hope. Looks like food inflation having dropped, may be about to accelerate again as yields drop in UK farming after 18 months of record breaking wet weather...

However, if this does drive inflation up again, I'm sure the BoE will be trying to find some way to blame this not on saturated fields, but on 'greedy' workers....

In the real world, this may well compound Brexit related import issues in the next year or so....
