#ClimateDiary Rapidly reaching the surreal stage

Farmers who have their entire cropping land submerged underwater have found they are ineligible for a government flooding hardship fund – because their farms are too far from a major river. #Floods #ukpolitics #farming

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/apr/11/flooded-farms-england-ineligible-compensation-distance-from-rivers

wanwizard,

@pvonhellermannn "Compensation will only be paid to farmers over the age of 80, in the presence of both parents".

witless,

@pvonhellermannn So the farmers can now sue the government for breach of contract, right? Because the government is implying that they'll keep the rivers within 150m of the riverbeds.

Haha, here you can see what bureaucratic idiotism is, totally clueless.
Being flooded does’nt depend on how far you’re away from a major river. 150m is a bad joke.

In "Stop the Damage! Build a Better Future" we wrote a little about insurance:
"Insurance is a problematic sector. At present, the market-based model of risk pooling, that elective insurance offers, means that insurance schemes accumulate money, becoming self-interested players in the financial markets,
creating all kinds of distortions. In the future, there will be an increase both in premiums and uninsurable risks.... "

@pvonhellermannn
"...The way forward is for the state to be the guarantor for risks that threaten livelihoods and safety and for the mutual and cooperative, i.e. non-profit sector to expand for elective insurance purposes."
There's more to do on this. Obviously the state would need to have flexible criteria for eligibility as the present case illustrates.

@markhburton thank you for this! All extremely good points. Insurance is such a crunch point, we should all be talking and thinking about it much more.

The piece you attached is great - i love its brevity and its language of “getting real”. Just before this i read a post by @RichardJMurphy about how “rudderless” Labour is, and how worrying that is - the very opposite of what we need.

Daft...
But doubtless the first of many such nonsenses, given that our legislation and 90% of our national 'rules and regulations' were drawn up before the climate crisis was even identified?
Perhaps our next act is to persuade our legislators/civil servants to bring the rules up to date.
Pronto.

@pvonhellermannn because water always obeys the 150m limit and evaporates thanos style if it strays across
